So this happened.

Airbus is often known for their bold airline designs, but the manufacturing company has gone to the extreme by issuing a patent that showcases passengers stacked on top of each other.

According to Wired, the seating plan has two levels with several aircraft cabins, nixing the standard overhead luggage space. There’s also space for business class with reclining seating. The company believes the proposed patent will help customers enjoy long flights and adds 30 percent more passengers for aircrafts to profit off.

Wired reports:

‘In modern means of transport, in particular in aircraft, it is very important from an economic point of view to make optimism use of the available space in a passenger cabin,’ the patent application says. ‘U.S. Pat. No. 4,066,227 proposes to position an elevated deck structure on the main deck floor in the passenger cabin of a wide body aircraft for providing a mezzanine seating area in a substantially unused upper lobe of the aircraft fuselage.’

To us, it resembles a more sinister outline designated for the same reason—to pack people in tight spaces. And while we’re sure the intention was not to stir up dark images of ships full of bodies in the Middle Passage, it’s enough to turn us off.

Do you think the company will pass the patent stage and will you fly on a mezzanine-style plane? Sound off in the comment section below.
