Melvin Russell, the son of Baltimore Lt. Col. Melvin Russell, was arrested Tuesday in connection with the stabbing death of his roommate, reports the Baltimore Sun. The suspect’s father is in charge of the department’s Community Collaboration Unit, which has been leading neighborhood outreach efforts.
The younger Russell, who is 28, is facing charges of first and second-degree murder, assault and weapons violations. He and his 49-year-old roommate allegedly got into a fight, and both sustained stab wounds. The yet to be identified roommate was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger will handle the case as Marilyn Mosby passed, citing conflict of interests.
