File Tyrese Gibson under yet another artist who has a bone to pick with the entertainment industry. The singer/songwriter has been pushing his newest album, Black Rose, really hard, but he has run into some frustration. “Shame,” the lead single from the album, which features Jennifer Hudson, has held the number one spot on Billboard charts for several weeks, but apparently the song has only been getting play on urban radio stations, and Tyrese wants more mainstream (read White) love.
“I don’t create limits for myself so I don’t appreciate mainstream not playing my song,” stated Gibson.
He added that Sam Smith, Robin Thicke, and Justin Timberlake all sing R&B/Soul music just like he does yet they get play on both urban and mainstream stations.
“We don’t say, ‘Because they’re White, they should be played only on the White stations.’ If I’m number one, my song deserves to be heard by the world.”
He added that he believed that if any of the aforementioned singers were actually singing “Shame” they’d get play on all formats.
“They’re limiting my reach!” he stated, and even cited Ryan Seacrest and Elvis Duran as folks from the “other” stations who haven’t gotten back to him.
Gibson’s rant follows Nicki Minaj’s VMA rant on a similar topic, and as much as he can be an annoying troll, he actually makes a lot of sense. You can’t deny his talent. He can sing circles around Thicke, Smith and Timberlake, and “Shame” is just as good a song as “Stay With Me” or any of the other ones in that lane.
But at the same time, Tyrese should focus on where he’s celebrated. Originators will always prosper.
