Ava DuVernay continues to deliver unique and fascinating looks on the red carpet, setting herself apart as a supremely talented film director and a budding style icon. Last weekend, the “Selma” director made an appearance at Russell Simmons’ Art for Life gala in one of our favorite looks yet: a printed maxi skirt with a gray t-shirt. She finished her look with natural makeup, flowing locks, drop earrings, bangle bracelets and a gold clutch.

We love that Ava paired her skirt with a simple gray top, proving just how versatile the printed maxi is. You can easily dress it up with heels and a clutch like Ava, or go a more casual route with flat sandals and a crossbody bag. Not convinced? Check out three ways to style a maxi skirt for different occasions below.

Look #1: Gala // Anthropologie skirt / SheInside sandals

Team an Anthropologie skirt with a Miss Selfridge t-shirt and SheInside sandals. Round out your look with an Aldo clutch, an Anthropologie necklace, a Kate Spade bangle and Mally Beauty under eye eyeliner.

Look #2: BBQ // Modcloth skirt / Gianvito Rossi sandals

Pair a Modcloth skirt with a Topshop crop top and Gianvito Rossi sandals. Complete your look with a Hobo Original bag, an ASOS cuff, Nali earrings, Prada sunglasses and Sephora lip stain.

Look #3: Office // Novis skirt / Charles David pumps

Style a Novis skirt with a Lela Rose blouse and Charles David pumps. Finish your look with a Sole Society tote, a Fossil watch, Bobbi Brown mascara and Prada eyeglasses.
