An internal investigation has found that more than a dozen Miami Beach officers have sent hundreds of racist and pornographic emails.
In all, 16 cops were tagged for sending the offensive messages, and Police Chief Daniel Oates told reporters that two of them were high-ranking officers in the MBPD. According to the Associated Press, one of those has since retired and the other one was fired.
The chief revealed that the cops, who have now endangered hundreds of criminal cases that they were witnesses in, sent more than 230 emails that were demeaning to Black people and women between 2010 and 2012.
Many of the messages included jokes about President Barack Obama and Tiger Woods while another depicted a battered woman with the caption, “Domestic violence. Because sometimes, you have to tell her more than once.” Yet another was of a “Black Monopoly” board game where every single square was
“Go To Jail.”
Even more disturbing is the fact that one officer sent an autopsy pic of a man that had been shot dead.
Supposedly, most of the cops were just passing along the emails they’d received.
According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, 540 cases have been jeopardized and they have to be reviewed to determine whether cops tainted the legal proceedings.
These activities are a breach of trust. They are disgusting,” Rundle said. “Our goal is to make sure our office reviews with a fine-toothed comb all of these cases.”
The cops in question might also face criminal charges if any minors were depicted in the sexually explicit material, which was uncovered during another unrelated internal investigation in 2013.
Officer Oates made it abundantly clear that the MBPD would not continue to tolerate this behavior.
“I can’t tell you how angry we are,” he stated. “We want to send a message to our officers and our employees that this kind of behavior is over.”
