America is about to see a whole lot of the Queen.
In a new interview with Uptown magazine, Queen Latifah reveals that she strips down for a nude scene in her upcoming HBO film, Bessie.
The biopic chronicles the life of the late blues singer, Bessie Smith, who was known not only for her talent, but also for her promiscuity and sexuality, which was taboo in her heyday in the 1920s and 1930s.
And, true-to-form, the 45-year-old beauty strips down for the role, and she’s feeling pretty damn confident about it too.
She tells Uptown:
I’ve never done that before. It was a little odd but it was also a quiet, relaxing thing. Sometimes she was so alone, and it was a moment for Bessie to acknowledge her vulnerability, which I can completely relate to … I don’t find [the scene] any more uncomfortable than kissing a girl in ‘Set It Off’ and sticking to the script. You have to take your mind off of yourself and honor that character. Respect Cleo, respect Bessie.
She also talks about the issue of gay marriage saying, “people’s ideas in general are antiquated when it comes to who you love.” She also noted that “there’s always been gay people in the Black community.”
