ON HER LOVE LIFE & RELATIONSHIP ADVICE

You’ve been in a lot of romantic comedies, but what’s the best-real life love advice you’ve ever gotten or that you’ve learned?

SANAA LATHAN: What I’ve learned is that people rush into things too quickly and it takes a long time to get to know somebody. So really get to know somebody before you let them all up into your world. You can do that in a slow way; as I get older I believe in the courting process, I believe in getting to know somebody, I believe in not jumping into it.

Is it really hard for you to date in Hollywood?

SL: I think dating is hard in general. But you have to be positive. I believe if you say ‘there’s no men’ then you create that.

Are you dating anyone right now?

SL: I’m dating happily. I’m getting to know my person.

Do you want to get married?

SL: I believe in love. I’m the ultimate romantic, I think that’s why I’ve done so many romantic comedies. I believe to each his own.  That said, it’s not the ultimate for me. To me it’s really about being with that person, so I don’t know. I don’t know how I feel about marriage. There are too many marriages that are ending in divorce or where people are unhappy for me to really get excited about it at this time. The divorce rate is pushing 50%! Would you invest in a stock that has a 50% failure rate? I mean, I don’t know. The jury is still out on how I feel about that, but I do believe in love.
