Terry McMillan is opening up about what allowed her to move one after her devastating divorce on the next episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?”

Six years into what she thought was a dream marriage to Jonathan Plummer, which inspired her to write How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Terry found out her husband was gay. The author was completely blindsided by the revelation of her husband’s true sexuality.

From there, Terry’s life became a nightmare as the nasty split played out all over the media. Terry wasn’t reluctant to speak out about her ex-husband, their relationship or his behavior towards her after coming out. It was obvious to everyone that Terry was hurting.

On the next episode of “Where Are They Now,” airing July 6 at 9 pm on OWN, Terry will share how she was finally able to forgive Jonathan. “I think being angry is really stupid. It’s really is stupid, and it weighs you down. Everybody around you feels it,” she mused. “I wasn’t fun for three years.”

After so much time in anger, Terry came to the conclusion that she couldn’t forgive her ex-husband without also forgiving herself.

“People do a lot of things to hurt each other, but it takes a different kind of energy–positive energy–to forgive someone,” she said in a teaser for her segment. “And I think mostly its forgiving yourself.”
