Avery Coffey, a high school senior from one of the poorest parts of Washington D.C., is in high demand this college-acceptance season. The 17-year-old from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School was accepted to five of the top schools in the nation.
According to Fox DC, Coffey applied to five Ivy League universities, and amazingly he was accepted at all of them: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, and Brown.
Coffey, who has a 4.3 grade point average, also received very generous financial aid packages from four of the five schools. (Harvard is still formulating their offer.) Although he hasn’t made up his mind yet, he said he’s leaning toward Penn or Harvard.
This was major news for the inner city student, who grew up in a single-parent household in D.C.’s Ward 8, the poorest part of the city. Coffey told reporters he plans to major in finance and purse a career at a Fortune 500 company. “I guess probably the CEO of an investment (or management consulting) firm,” he said of his dream job. “I guess pretty much overseeing acquisitions or transactions between large companies. Hopefully, Fortune 500 companies.”
What’s Coffey’s advice to younger kids in his neighborhood? “You can go anywhere you want to, pursue any career that you want to, and you shouldn’t let anybody hinder you from trying to reach your goals,” he said.
Along with keeping up with his academic studies, the teen said he enjoys sports like baseball, basketball, tennis and soccer.
