From Rock to R&B, here are some of the most entertaining and heart-wrenching music-themed movies to curl up to this weekend! Enjoy!

Walk The Line

Back in 2005 director James Mangold brought the life story of musician Johnny Cash to the big screen. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon (as Cash and his longtime love June Carter),  Walk the line gives a great look into the country music legends early life on an Arkansas farm and his meteoric rise to fame.  (136 min., PG-13)

The Five Heartbeats

Written by Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Waynes, this 1991 film has become a classic in many of our homes. Shoot, I watch it every time it airs on BET. Though it follows a fictional group, The Five Heart Beats is a story we have seen happen in real life many times; the rise and fall of music group. With a cast that includes Diahann Carol, Leon and John Witherspoon you’ll want to pick up the soundtrack while you’re at it! (121 min., R)

Cadillac Records

Chronicling the rise of Chess records and it’s bevy of artists like Muddy Waters, Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry. This 2008 film was filled with good music and had a stellar cast including Beyonce, Jeffrey Wright, Mos Def and Columbus Short. The soundtrack is a must grab too! (109 min., R)

This Is Spinal Tap

This Rock doc spoof is considered to be one of the most quoted films of all time.  Hitting screen’s in 1984, Rob Reiner’s comedy follows “Spinal Tap”, a rock group made up of five members and known as the “The World’s loudest band.” Things don’t end well for the guys but at least we get to hear quotes like “This piece is called, ‘ Like my love pump’” from the groups guitarist Nigel. (82 Min., R)

Ray

This fascinating and moving telling of the life of Ray Charles led Jamie Foxx to an Oscar win for Best Actor in 2005. Wildly entertaining with great music throughout, Ray leads us through Ray Charles’ humble beginnings to the monumental stardom he experiences in the 50’s and 60’s. (152 min., PG-13)
