Islamic militant groups are the suspected criminals responsible for gunning down a Nigerian agricultural school campus, while many students slept in the dormitories. The attackers torched classroom and opened fire on the dorms during a violent attack that’s said to be a part of Nigeria’s ever-growing Islamic extremist uprising.
It’s being reported that as many as 50 students were killed in the attack in rural Gujuba. Provost Molima Idi Mato of Yobe State College of Agriculture told the Associated Press that he couldn’t give an exact death toll because security forces are still recovering bodies, but their ages range between 18-22. The 1,00 students enrolled in the school have now fled and most schools in the area have closed after a separate militant attack on July 6 that killed 29 students and a teacher.
A surviving student told the AP that the attacks rode into the college in two double-cabin pickup all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles. Many of them were dressed in Nigerian military camouflage and knew the layout of the school. They attacked only the male dorms. Many of those who were attacked were Muslim, which is also true of the entire student body.
The scene outside of the hospital morgue was gruesome, as rescue workers laid out the bloody, lifeless bodies on the lawn for family members to identify. Many of the victims lay in the positions they were killed in–hands in prayer, arms up in surrender and hands protecting their chests.
CBS is reporting Northeastern Nigeria is under a military state of emergency to battle the Islamic uprising The Islamic extremists have killed at least 30 other civilians in the past week. Tens of thousands of people have fled Nigeria because of the attacks.
We sincerely hope Nigeria gets a strong defense set up to fight off these Islamic extremists. Our prayers are with the Nigerians.
