Ok so, the natural movement is officially a thing. The hair nazi’s are out and active on our social media timelines and the guilt is real. Understanding that going natural is a task not to be taken lightly is the key to no back peddling (aka the key to not giving into the creamy crack)! Here’s a few hairstyling tips that are guaranteed to get you over that hump.

TIP #1

Cornrows are my personal favorite. They’re vacation and pool side friendly. They’re bedtime friendly. They’re pretty much just awesome to me. Here recently celebrities have been seen sporting individual box braids. Although it takes me way too far back into my high school days, this style will last you through the better part of your transition and you’ll be left with a few months of new growth.  Goddess braids are my second fav and depending on how long your hair is this is the best option for you too.

TIP #2

Two strand twists are a slightly tedious task but well worth it for the outcome. I recommend this for individuals with long thick or course hair. If your hair is thin or short this isn’t the option for you. You will waste time trying to achieve the unachievable. I’ve only tried this once and it was on a Sunday night. It took about 2 hours for the whole process and lasted me until Tuesday.

TIP #3

This style may not be totally acceptable for the 9-5 girl but if you’re office is progressive enough, this a great style to master. What’s even better about this style is that it’s a perfect transition piece for your evening outings. Headbands, fedoras, and Turbans (my uber fave) all can mask those out of control roots.

TIP #4

I don’t really recommend weaves without some professional guidance (read here for the best weave tips ever). Most naturalistas swear by these so much so that you’d never be able to guess whose natural and whose not. But find a good weaveologist for a consult who can keep your edges healthy. Nothing is worst than claiming to be natural but it’s all damaged goods underneath because of a bad weave.

TIP #5

Ultimately the best way to go natural is just to release your tresses of the chemicals and cut it ALL off. Some choose to cut it out little but little and others just grab the issue by the balls and chop… chop… chop…
