Brad Paisley and LL Cool J’s song “Accidental Racist” has done exactly what it was supposed to do–start controversy, or in LL’s words “start a conversation.” The iconic rapper sat down with “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” to clarify his intentions on doing such a song that so many people took offense to. “You can’t fit 300 or 400 years of history into a 3-4 minute song,” he said.
LL, who is promoting his forthcoming album “Authentic,” admitted that he isn’t shocked by the backlash. “As long as people are having a conversation, then the art has done its job,” he told Leno. His comparative lyrics about du-rags and red flags are an anchor in the current race debate. “I would never, ever, ever suggest to anyone that we should just forget slavery and act like that didn’t happen,” he continued. “I understand the systemic racism that exists, I get that, but if the playing field is unlevel and you feel it’s unfair, then maybe putting down some of that baggage will help you make it up that hill a little easier.” Says the person who lives atop of a hill in a mansion.
“Accidental Racist” seems like a publicity stunt.
