For the past few years Marvel Studios has been patiently  building up to a big reveal with individual movies on Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk. Now movie and comic big fans are finally treated to the big climax in The Avengers.

Stan Lee Says Michael Jackson Would Have Been A Good Spiderman

If the sheer magnitude of this much super-powered muscle sharing the screen at once is not enough to get you in the theater, here are 5 reasons to make The Avengers a must-see this weekend.

5) Billion dollar baby: With a gross of 218 million dollars in the foreign market after only six days and two more days until its North American release, The Avengers is hard set to finally become Marvel’s first film to gross a billion dollars and for good reason. The film is fantastic. It’s already on a fast track to top all of Marvel’s independently produced film’s global box office numbers (Iron Man $585m, Iron Man 2 $623m, Captain America $368m, Thor $449m) by the end of this week.

4) A Whedon Masterpiece: Joss Whedon, who’s no stranger to comedy or on screen writing and directing success (Toy Story, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel), does a masterful job in both writing and directing The Avengers. The levity and directorial craftsmanship he brings to a film that could easily be a train wreck in the wrong hands is both well balanced and award worthy. However, the 3D for this film is absolutely unnecessary and wasn’t taken advantage of at all. Don’t waste your money. See it in 2D.

3) All-Star Cast: Robert Downey Jr. Samuel L. Jackson. Scarlett Johansson. Chris Evans. Mark Ruffalo. Jeremy Renner. Chris Hemsworth. Tom Hiddleston. Colbie Smulders. Clark Greg. I could stop right there because those names say enough but I won’t. A cast of this magnitude and with this much star power could very well be mishandled but fortunately for Marvel fans this isn’t the case. The chemistry between this group is nothing short of great and the ebb and flow of witty dialogue, super hero ego checking, and effortless comedy is some of the best I’ve ever seen from a film not branded a comedy.

2) A Comedy Riot: The last thing I expected was to laugh hardly at all going into this film, let alone at almost every other line of dialogue. Joss Whedon took a story that could have been and a smash and destroy super hero action film that would have been acceptable to most people, and turned it into arguably one of the funniest films you’ll see all year. The comedic timing of the actors is impeccable for what is mostly a non comedic ensemble and the balance of comedy and destruction will make Marvel fans very happy and drive some to see the film multiple times.

5 Comic Book Movie Franchises That Need A Reboot

1) Simply Marvelous: This film is a grand slam. Plain and simple. I haven’t enjoyed any Marvel film the way I enjoyed The Avengers. If you aren’t a Marvel fan this film will definitely bring you aboard the train. The character balance is great (you never get too much of any of them) and at different points in the film it feels like it belongs to each character independently. Sam Jackson is a class act as always and when things ramp up, you find yourself begging him to drop his infamous MF bomb.

Tom Hiddleston(Thor, War Horse, Midnight In Paris) as the film’s villain Loki (carried over from the Thor movie) is great and what I believe is a stand out performance from Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk may have solved Marvel’s problem of finding an actor to consistently carry the character in a solo film. The film is non-stop, fast paced and doesn’t seem to waste any screen time. Bottom line, see this film. You won’t regret it and of course, you want to stay past the credits.
