Students at Eastern Michigan University gathered in protest after racist graffiti was discovered on campus.

The president of the school released a statement to the community at 10:47 a.m., Tuesday morning, about the letters “KKK” written on walls with a racist epithet.

“The University strongly condemns such a racist and thoughtless act, which runs completely counter to the values and welcoming environment of our highly diverse Eastern Michigan University community,” President James Smith said in the statement.

The damage was quickly removed upon discovery, USA Today reports.

The perpetrators have not been found, but university officials believe security cameras in the King Hall will aid their search.

The incident brought to light covert prejudice and hatred on campus, leading many students to band together in solidarity against racism.

The peaceful demonstrations quickly turned dangerous when a frustrated driver drove through the crowd, running over protesters:

According to officials, no one was injured in the violent act.
