As if there weren’t already plenty reasons to not have unprotected sex, here’s one more.
The World Health Organization released a report today saying STIs, which are generally known for their curability, are becoming untreatable.
Gonorrhoea, chlamydia, and syphilis have gained resistance against common antibiotics. Gonorrhoea has the strongest resistance and infects 78 million people a year. Certain strains are resistant even to multi-drug antibiotic treatment options.
For women, if these infections go undiagnosed, they can lead to long-term health issues such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, or miscarriage. They also can also increase risk of contracting HIV two-to-three fold.
It’s key to note that even if you are using condoms or diaphragms, some of these infections can be spread from contact with the mouth or genitals. Also, these infections don’t always exhibit symptoms to alert you that something is wrong.
That means — always get tested with your partners and deliver a clean bill of health before engaging in sexual activity. It’s not the sexiest thing, but it sure is the safest.
