Black Girls Rock! 2016 - Arrivals

Since Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle fulfilled their destiny in 2004, we’ve been yearning for a girl group to pick up where their harmonies left off.

If you’re a fan of girl groups like I am, you found viewing TV pleasure (or binge-watching joy) in Kelly Rowland’s “Chasing Destiny.” The docu-series followed Kelly and industry notable Frank Gatson Jr. as the duo navigated three cities and 600 auditions in search of the next big girl group. Gatson was the Simon Cowell to Kelly’s Jennifer Lopez– often bringing comedic relief with his brazen critiques of the girls. It was like “Making The Band” all over again, minus the glitz and glam only Diddy could provide.

It took seven episodes for Kelly to narrow it down to the final five girls, who were announced last night. Ashley, Gabby, Shyann, Brienna and Kristal made the cut while powerhouse/ cantankerous Chicago native Khylah and talented Alyxx were eliminated. Khylah clearly didn’t need to be in anyone’s group and can easily thrive on her own, if she gets her image and attitude together.

Kelly ultimately decided who “made the group” and who didn’t. While she was the bearer of bad news, the show did tons for her likability factor. If you didn’t understand Kelly before, the show did wonders. The “Motivation” singer came across as business-minded but caring and nurturing. When it came to time to send the girls home, she did it with a motherly love that made the short-lived experience bitter sweet. Most of the girls left praising Kelly and Frank for the opportunity and all they had learned.

“Chasing Destiny” is over now, but I can’t deny how good it felt to see a successful Black woman giving back to the young Black women. I hope BET picks it up for a second season and we get to watch the girls transform into the force we all know they can be.

Bring on the love songs, female anthems and booty bouncing songs like “Bootylicious.” These girls can sing their asses off and I don’t know about you, but I’m hype to see how they bring it.

Hit the play button on their bomb acapella cover of “Hotline Bling.”
