Capitol Building Shooter Identified: Larry Dawson of Antioch, Tennessee

Multiple new sources have revealed that Larry Dawson of Antioch, Tennessee, was responsible for the Capital Building shooting on Monday, according to The Daily Beast.

While police have not confirmed Dawson as the shooter, Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said the suspect “drew what appeared to be a weapon and pointed it at officers” during routine screening at the visitors center. No one was killed, but one female bystander was hurt and the suspect was shot and is currently undergoing surgery. Also, Dawson’s weapon was recovered and the building was put on lockdown for a few hours.

This isn’t Dawson’s first run in with Capital police. According to the Daily Beast, back in 2015, at the Capitol building he was arrested on assault charges and “unlawful conduct” claiming to be a “prophet of God” from the balcony of the House of Representatives.  (The Daily Beast)

On Easter Sunday, a Tennessee man was arrested for bringing two weapons into a church.

Memphis police told Fox 13 News that Marcus Donald, 31, brought a loaded 40-caliber Beretta and a 300 Blackout assault rifle to the 11 a.m. service at Bellevue Baptist Church. Upon his arrest, Donald allegedly told officers that “people in society are a threat to him and that he must be vigilant.”

Donald had one weapon in his pocket and the other in a backpack as he entered the church that had 4,500 people in attendance. He was arrested for emergency commitment and is currently being evaluated by police, Fox 13 noted.

“We are thankful for the diligence of (our) security and the Memphis Police Department,” Jim Barnwell, Bellevue Baptist Church, Director of Communication Services, said.

Clearly since Dylann Roof shot and killed 9 parishioners at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church  in South Carolina last June, churches around the country have stepped up their security. (Fox 13 News)

Women’s College Basketball Coach Fired For Removing Two players Who Were Dating

Last week, Prairie View A&M women’s basketball coach Dawn Brown was asked to resign or be fired for suspending two players on her team because they were dating one another. The two players, who have athletic scholarships, filed a complaint saying the basketball team’s policy of no fraternizing between players, coaches and staff violated their Title IX rights, which bans  “sexual discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance,” The Washington Post wrote.

But Brown says the rule was approved by A&M’s Title IX coordinator and put in place after an assistant coach was fired for having an inappropriate relationship with another player. She is appealing her firing and told USA Today that she feels “betrayed and unjustly penalized by this action.”

Meanwhile, the two players still can keep their scholarships.  (The Washington Post) (USA Today)

For 30 days, two prisons in Michigan held a water drive that yielded 29,000 bottles for middle school students in Flint, The Huffington Post reported.

Inmates and staff at Pugsley Correctional Facility and Oaks Correctional Facility held a contest to see which prison could collect the most water for student attending the Genesee County’s Intermediate School District in Flint. While Pugsley Correctional Facility collected the most water, they believe that the real winners are the children.

It wasn’t us that won. It wasn’t Oaks that won. This is going to those kids at ISD in Genesee County. They won,” Robert Gauthier, general office assistant at Pugsley who came up with the idea, said.

According to the Huff Po, the two prisons collected so much water “that the school district didn’t have enough room to take on the enormous donation, so the facilities are sending their water to the schools in shifts.”(The Huffington Post)
