Georgetown University Renames Buildings Associated With Slavery 

Amidst racial tensions throughout college campuses in the nation, John J. DeGioia, president of Georgetown University has announced the plan to rename two buildings. Student dormitory, Mulledy Hall, was named after previous president and Jesuit priest, Thomas F. Mulledy who authorized the sale of nearly 300 slaves to a Louisiana plantation owner in 1838. The interim building name is Freedom Hall. William McSherry, another former Georgetown president owned slaves and was also apart of the advisory board for Mulledy’s 1838 slave trade. His building, which is a mediation center will temporary be called Remembrance Hall. [The Washington Post]

The Late Shirley Chisholm Amongst The 17 New Recipients Of The Presidential Medal of Freedom

On November 24, President Obama will honor 17 trail blazers with the coveted Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation. A posthumous honor will go to Shirley Chisholm who made history in 1968 as the first African-American woman elected to Congress as well as the first woman of color to make a bid for President of the United States. [Black Star News]

64-Year-Old Black Woman Tasered By Police

Venetta Bullock was pulled over on an Arkansas road for not dimming her headlights. The 64-year-old was perplexed by the confrontation and repeatedly questioned the officers resulting in the administering of a breathalyzer. Bodycam video shows Bullock talking with her hands but being of no apparent threat to the officers; however, she was then arrested and tasered. She was initially charged with a DUI, battery and resisting arrest. Upon reviewing the video the charges were dropped and resisting arrest, was reduced to disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. [Bossip]

10-Year-Old Girl Shot Over Road Rage

In Harris County, TX police are currently on the search for a suspect involved in a hit and run accident. The assailant driving a Cadillac Coupe Deville hit the Jeep of a young mother and her two children. When the Cadillac sped away without acknowledging the incident, the 32-year-old mother followed the car and when she pulled up along side the Cadillac, the driver shot and hit her 10-year-old daughter. Luckily there were no fatalities, only one bullet grazed the child’s cheek. [Click2Houston]

Students Hold Sit-In For Muslim Student Wrongly Associated With Paris Attacks

University of Connecticut student, Mahmoud Hashem had hate speech written on the door of his dorm room following the terror attacks in Paris. “Mahmoud killed Paris” read the derogatory comments to the student who is in his first semester at the school.”I was so upset. I cried at first,” he said. “I love America, I’ve come to America, so don’t treat me like a terrorist…I don’t deserve that.”  In response, the university released a statement denouncing the incident. Hundreds of students and staff took part in a sit-in to show their love and support for Hashem. [WFSB]
