The NFL seems to be punishing Pittsburgh Steelers player DeAngelo WilliamsThe running back previously made headlines for petitioning the league to wear pink all season in honor of his mother and four aunts who died of breast cancer. That request was denied.

In response, DeAngelo and his foundation paid for 53 women to have mammograms.

Less than a month later, DeAngelo is back in the news after being fined by the NFL for a uniform violation. He has the words, “We Will Find A Cure” and a pink breast cancer ribbon on his black under-eye paint.

According to ESPN writer, Jeremy Fowler, DeAngelo has been wearing the message under his helmet for the last five years. However, he just received his first $5,757 fine in the midst of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

If that’s not the definition of a backlash and another selfish way for the league to make money, we don’t know what is! Yahoo Sports created a shocking infographic which says in the last seven years, since the NFL began it’s “Critical Catch” Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, about $8 million has been raised for the American Cancer Society.

That number is dismal compared to the nearly $100 million the league has fined players for various violations.

We wonder if DeAngelo were Caucasian, would there be the same level of opposition in trying to honor his late family members and empower breast cancer survivors? We hope he challenges this frivolous charge.
