There’s something so powerful about Tamia‘s ability to write song lyrics that capture the way love feels. But when she called up her husband, NBA legend Grant Hill, to let him know that one of her songs on her forthcoming disc Love Life  was about him, he was admittedly pretty damn nervous.

“I wrote it for my husband. It’s kind of just about our relationship and growing together,” she told an intimate audience at her NYC album listening event. “I called him and told him I wrote a song about him and he was like ‘oh no!’ Before I go in the studio he’s like ‘Are you good? Are we good? It’s all good?'”

“The poor man has had to endure ‘Stranger [In My House]’ and other songs like that, so it was time,” she said.

From her debut album to now, Tamia’s poured her heart into her music and you can expect that from  Love Life. Her lead single “Sandwich And A Soda provides the blueprint to keeping your man happy.

But it’s the ode to her marriage to Hill that is the stuff wedding songs are made of.

“It’s crazy how we’re still in love the way we were on day one,” she sings on the stripped down ballad, called “Day One.”

Watch as Tamia explains the inspiration behind one of Love Life‘s most vulnerable tracks.

Tamia’s new album hits stores June 9.
