On Sunday former NYPD officer Wenjian Liu was laid to rest in Brooklyn. His funeral service was attended by New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton and cops from both Liu’s precinct and across the nation. Before the service, it was asked by Bratton for the boys in blue to stop turning their backs on the mayor, as they had done so at fellow cop Rafael Ramos’ funeral when de Blasio gave his eulogy (both died at a hands of a mentally disturbed gunman back in December.) Yet despite Bratton’s urges, as he had called it “inappropriate,” as if on cue, when de Blasio went on stage to speak, thousands of cops–though not all of them–again turned their backs on him.

NYPD cops turning their backs has been their loudest and most disrespectful response to the mayor’s support of the #BLACKLIVESMATTER protests and it shows a general lack of understanding as they are dealing with the current ripple of revenge on police.

Bratton said, “A hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance,” but many cops still wanted to show the mayor no love was lost. After the funeral, some cops and detectives had even given soundbites to the media, calling the mayor “a joke” and tit-for-tat comments like, “The mayor has no respect for us. Why should we have respect for him?”

It’s been a rough for week for de Blasio and the NYPD. He was even booed at a recent graduation at a police academy. Some officers are accusing de Blasio’s vouch for the protests–many of which were non-violent and not connected to cops being shot and killed–has only further encouraged the divide amongst civilians, especially of color and the police.

Beauties, what do you think? Should the cops give a rest with turning their backs? Are their disagreements with de Blasio fair? Sound off in the comments below.
