“Honey, you’re 300 sandwiches away from an engagement ring!” New York Post editor, Stephanie Smith’s boyfriend, Eric Schulte told her when she made him turkey sandwich for the first time. And so 300sandwiches.com was born. Armed with a brand new Nikon DSLR and a freshly purchased URL, Stephanie set out to chronicle her journey towards earning that ring through Eric’s taste buds. Stephanie’s blog has caught the attention of culinary icons like Emeril Lagasse, Michael White and Ken Friedman since she started last summer!

“Ten sandwiches or so in, I did the math. Three sandwiches a week, times four weeks a month, times 12 months a year, meant I wouldn’t be done until I was deep into my 30s. How would I finish 300 sandwiches in time for us to get engaged, married and have babies before I exited my childbearing years?” Stephanie wondered.

“Relationships are a marathon, not a sprint. Take it one sandwich at a time,” Stephanie’s mother encouraged her. While most of the people around her preached chauvinism, Stephanie looked at her sandwich-making as a tool to bring her and her boyfriend closer.

“Though I still want to get engaged and get married and live happily ever after, I’ve also put less pressure on the race to the 300th sandwich and I’m enjoying the cooking experience with Eric.” Stephanie and Eric’s bond has strengthened, as they both enjoy grocery shopping trips and a love for all things food.

Stephanie resorted to making sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner, in order to meet her goal in a timely manner. Stephanie even made dessert sandwiches!

And what does Eric have to say about Stephanie’s sandwiches? “You women read all these magazines to get advice on how to keep a man, and it’s so easy,” he says. “We’re not complex. Just do something nice for us. Like make a sandwich.”

Hey, didn’t momma always say the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?
