“Adorn” singer Miguel found himself in a heated debate with the Twitterverse after he tweeted that Black people “are the most judgmental people in the world.” Being Black all my life, I can actually agree with his statement. Though it doesn’t make it less offensive, Miguel backed up his blasphemous claim by saying “we’ve been conditioned, pre-programmed to hate ourselves.” I furthermore agree.
“The real know you’ve already sold your soul, you proved it in your prayer “Use Me” clearly wasn’t to God! Can’t fool us all,” is this venomous tweet that sparked the conversation. Clearly, Miguel was trying to defend himself but brought the entire Black race for the ride while doing so. Oddly, I’m not angry or ready to boycott his music. His statement is a judgement in its own, unintentionally aiding in proving his point. Of Mexican and Black descent, Miguel has equally earned the right to call out his people if he feels he is being treated unfairly. Despite the countless negative responses he received (this one is my favorite: “Miguel calling black folks the most judgmental in the world. N*gga, have you met a cat?”) it doesn’t change the fact that Black people can be quite harsh on their own kind.
