The family of slain teenager, Hadiya Pendleton has been invited to the White House by Michelle Obama for Easter. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton and her 10-year-old son Nathaniel Pendleton were invited to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, held on April 1st.

Must Read: We Remember Hadiya Pendleton

Hadiya was brutally murdered only weeks after performing at President Obama’s second inauguration. The FLOTUS attended the teen’s funeral earlier this year and invited the family as special guests of hers at the President’s State Of The Union Address.

Hadiya has become one of the faces of the increasing gun violence in Chicago. According to NBC Chicago, Senator Dick Durbin created “Hadiya’s Law,” which is also known as the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act of 2013. This law is set to give perpetrators 15-25 years for illegally buying guns from someone who is authorized, when they are not.

With each death, weighing just as much as the last, it’s time the people of Chicago really take a stand against the senseless violence they face. Of course, it’s not the only city plagued by unnecessary violence, but it can be a part of the solution to the growing problem.

Hadiya’s family has been very vocal in their fight against the violence, so the FLOTUS’ invitation to the White House’s Easter Egg Hunt comes at a great time to grant them a bit of a reprieve from all the grief they’ve been experiencing lately.
