Rihanna’s new video, “Man Down” has caused quite the controversy. From parents, to the media, to her fans, it seems as though everyone has had something to say about the subject matter in the video. The outspoken Rihanna obviously wasn’t going to hold her tongue on this one, as she took to her Twitter to express her feelings surrounding the controversy as well as called into BET’s “106 & Park” earlier this week to speak her mind and explain why she chose this subject matter for the video.

She told 106 & Park hosts Terrence J and Rocsi “I don’t like to just make videos. I love to make an experience and this is art with a message. Obviously the character is not a cold-blooded killer. It has to be something so offensive and we decided to hone in on a very serious matter that people are afraid to address.”

She went on to say, “Rape is happening all over the world and right in our own home and we continue to cover it up and pretend it doesn’t happen.  I personally don’t condone violence or murder. I’ve been abused in the past and you don’t see me running around killing people in my spare time. I just want girls to be careful.”

She explained that her intention was to send a message to any woman who felt as though they had been victimized.

Yes, Rihanna’s video is quite controversial but I thought it was amazing and had a strong message in it and I definitely understand where Rihanna is coming from. I also understand why parents would not want their children watching this video but it does have a strong message that every woman (and man) should see and understand. This video definitely took a lot of thought and hard work, and I would love to see more artists making videos with a strong message!
