Today, March 27, marks the 9th anniversary of “Black Marriage Day”. Black Marriage Day was founded in 2002 by Nisa Muhammad’s Wedded Bliss Foundation and is a day dedicated to cherishing and celebrating African American marriages. Families in over 300 communities in America participate in Black Marriage Day each year where there are events organized to help celebrate those in wedded bliss. Last year, communities promoted Tyler Perry’s movie, “Why Did I Get Married Too”, inducted happily married couples into the Black Marriage Day Hall of Fame and just celebrated being together, being in love and showed how happy they are to be together.
If you or your community is interested in participating in Black Marriage Day, it’s actually quite simple. You can easily organize couples in your family or office to celebrate being married. The purpose of Black Marriage Day is to promote marriages in the black community and to promote commitment in black marriages so that more children have the chance to grow up in a two parent home.
I’ve never heard of Black Marriage Day until today, and think it’s actually a great idea to promote marriages and commitment in marriages in our community. Married couples should hang around other married couples and encourage each other to stay committed in their own marriages and learn how to strengthen their relationships and grow as a couple.
