May 29 marks the official release of Darnell Moore‘s forthcoming memoirNo Ashes in the Fire. On April 30, the esteemed writer and activist hosted an intimate preview event at NYC’s Dream Baby alongside writers Charise Frazier (News Editor, HelloBeautiful), George M. Johnson (All Boys Aren’t Blue), and Hari Ziyad (Editor-in-Chief, RaceBaitR).

The evening was marked by a thought-provoking exploration of self, love, and how Black folks grapple with lovelessness.

“Had he not died before I wrote the book, he would have been written as a different character,” Moore shared after reading a stirring passage about his late father. “What this book allowed me to do was wrestle with his complexity … It was one of the most moving moments of my life.”

Moore went on to acknowledge that while his father “did bad things,” he was also able to understand his context, which he stated was not to exonerate him of his wrongs, but, instead, to see him as human.

“In seeing him as human, I was able to also see myself as human and see the monsters in myself,” he continued.

No Ashes in the Fire—which was called intense and passionate by the legendary bell hooks—is available for preorder. Head to Amazon to reserve your copy, then mark your calendars for May 31 when Moore brings the celebration to Brooklyn Academy of Music with Brittney Cooper, Marc Lamont Hill, and more.
