As rappers release music videos with women who all seem to look exactly the same–long hair, curvy bodies and racially ambiguous complexions–we’ve noticed a new trend bubbling to the surface…the prototype video boy!

I was doing my normal routine, browsing various sources for new music, when I came across Fantasia’s new video “Lose To Win.” I clicked play faster than I normally would, had she not recently been engulfed in literacy drama. Greeted by Fanny’s wig, that looked like it was picked up on the set of the “3 Stooges,” I couldn’t ignore the man candy pretending to be her love interest. He looks like someone I’ve seen before. But who? Then it dawned on me, it was this guy:

Not the same person, but d*mnit they look-alike! The devilishly handsome, green-eyed, light-skin man who stole the attention away from Nicki Minaj in her video “Right Thru Me,” could pass as Fantasia’s video boy (a more attractive version). I got to thinking about all the other vixen men who look like that and geez. Have black women started to do exactly what we’ve been chastising black men for doing? Are there no darker skinned people in all of the world? I know there are. I see them everyday, don’t you?

Rapper Kendrick Lamar said this about choosing a darker toned lead for his video “Poetic Justice”: “It’s almost like a color blind industry where there’s only one type of appeal to the camera.“
