I’m working the other night at this jazz club in midtown New York, and I’m doing my usual small talk as the customers wait in line to get into the show. I come across a young couple that I know and ask, what brings them out? The girl responds with a huge smile on her face, “It is Boyfriend Appreciation Night”. It truly caught me off guard. What was boyfriend appreciation night? Sounded interesting, I wanted to hear more.

She goes on to explain that every so often she surprises her boyfriend with special nights dedicated just to him, where she can show how much she truly appreciates all he does for her. For a moment I must have thought I was Oprah, because I wanted to do something extremely nice for this couple and send them on a 5 day trip to an island just because of such a creative effort to keep their relationship alive. I snapped back into reality and realized I wasn’t Oprah at all, so instead I got them comp tickets into the club and saved them a table for two in the front.

After talking to this couple I started thinking about how people always want to know how to make a relationship last. How do you keep the other person interested and invested in the relationship? I realized it isn’t a long list of over thought theories, but it is the simple things that truly make a relationship stay strong. It is the small things like “Boyfriend Appreciation Night” that keep people feeling appreciated in their relationship.

A relationship is very much a like a career, you must invest time into making it successful. Your creativity and ability to think outside of the box makes things more exciting and worth the investment from the other party.

When you are in a relationship with someone you are constantly in the process of learning how to bring the best out of that person, so take time to truly figure out what makes them smile, what inspires them, what pushes them, and constantly work on making them remember why they wanted to be with you in the first place. So, don’t simply rely on some list of ideas someone else suggest for keeping your relationship alive, try to tailor your ideas to reflect something your own partner would truly appreciate.

So cheers to “Boyfriend Appreciation Night” and every other effort couples are making to truly make their relationships strong.

But making the years count.” – Michelle St. Amand
