I know you’re thinking: what on earth is an anal pap?! It’s not as crazy as it sounds. It’s actually a great way to detect and prevent cancer of the anus.
In the past few years doctors have become more aware of factors that lead to anal cancer. The Human Papillomavirus is related to anal cancer just like it is linked to cervical cancer. Individuals infected with HPV are more likely to develop anal cancer. Since HPV is the most transmitted sexual infection it’s really important to get not only your cervical pap but also an anal pap yearly.
Who’s at risk:
- Men and women who have anal sex
- Men and women who are HIV postitive
- Men and women who have or have had HPV
