The Huffington Post reports that women in the military are more likely to be raped by their fellow soldiers than killed in combat:
“Military women are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq.”
The latest figures include 2,280 cases in which a victim provided full accounts and physical evidence when possible, and 643 in which a victim sought care or made a report but refused to provide all the information necessary to pursue an investigation.
The article also points out that the problem with rape cases is that they often are not reported or that they don’t even reach trial. Women who have been raped can suffer from intimidation, shame and fear. This can cause many surviors to not seek justice. The military could also be to blame for not providing a supportive and safe environment for rape survivors.
