From PEOPLE:

The “Set It Off” castmates are still closer than ever.

While presenting Queen Latifah with the Power Award at the third annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, Pinkett Smith became choked up over the recent passing of her father, who succumbed to a heart attack.

“My father died last week, and I’m flying tomorrow to bury him,” said Pinkett Smith, 38. “But I wanted to come because when those types of losses happen a lot of things get illuminated and your priorities fall in line.”

She added, “When I think about Latifah I think about a woman who makes me feel loved. She can sit in the throne of my soul and just be there with me. She makes me laugh.”

Unable to continue her speech due to a heavy flow of tears, Pinkett Smith found herself on stage alone and unable to speak – until Latifah came up to stand beside her.

“This is what I’m talking about,” Pinkett Smith, said, picking up her introduction. “I don’t see her a lot, but she’s my girl.”

My sympathy to her and her family. It’s always so hard when you lose someone so close and although you never get over it, the years get a little easier with time and loved ones around you.

My prayers go out to Jada. That has to be hard and I don’t look forward to the day of losing my parents. It will probably take a lot out of me. I don’t even like thinking about it.

Condolenses to Jada and her family. I lost my dad in 2003. I totally understand. The main focus is to continue your journey, that is what will make him most proud. For those who never experienced having a father, remember it his loss, it probably happened like that for a reason. My dad i lost was a stepfather, my biological is still living, he just dont fool with me. Thats okay with me. I will be graduating college, for the second time in 2012. Never stop being great.

My condolences go out to Jada and her fam. Now….Just rediculous. I don’t understand how this guy (ihateinteracial) – [which is incorrectly spelled by the way] even knows how to transfer the thoughts from his pea-sized brain to the computer screen. I agree with the comments and thoughts of everyone that he has singled out. He never said my name, but I’m Black, mixed with Cherokee and White, so therefore I’m interracial. He’s jealous deep inside that dark, frozen, and broken heart of his. Either, he does’nt want to admit it, or he just does’nt pay much attention to what little scraps of a heart he has. Who knew that the millineum would leave us with such vicious, primitive, prejudice animals? You would think that everyone would have pulled together when they were scared the world was gonna end the first time in 1999. Now things are getting so bad, and human beings as the dominate being of the planet have’nt gotten any better as a kind. It’s pretty sad. I think you really need to get it together while you still have a chance. Not many people last too long with an attitude like yours. I’m surprised you’re still alive. Someone just might not like what you have to say one day, and they may just end your life then and there. Consider yourself warned, you’re pretty cruel, but i’m sure you just haven’t met your match. There’s nothing wrong with interracial families. They make beautiful babies. Anybody pretty or cute can make a beautiful child, but mixed people just have the best of both worlds. I think that all people are beautiful, it’s not always the facial features, it’s the heart, personality, and mind of a person that makes them beautifully crafted. None of us are really just one race, we are all mixed somewhere down the line. So please calm down on the ignorance, and learn some things in life. Who knows? You may actually become a better… well…. become a human being you uneduated spider monkey. Right now, the closest you come to being a human, is a cave-man, and i think they had more sense than you.

Yes, I am a rather diluted person. However, I don’t “play” black. I’m very comfortable just knowing where I came from. My mother is German and my father is Irish, Cherokee Indian, and Black American. I embrace all cultures, not just my own.

msshelly123…You poor ,ignorant, naive fool.first real race talk is very necessary, its the elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge,i love my people and it pains me that we are so underinformed on real life issues..all we care about is trivial, mind numbing entertainment and gossip.I could care less about any of these so called black entertainers who add no value to real human progress. to hell with every basketball dunkin, football runnin, singin, rappin’,stage shufflin handkerchief head.Im tired of the influence these shallow media negras have over us.They get used up,played out and we waste time paying for the distraction of entertainment and makin’these negras and their massa’s rich until massa has no more use for them and takes all his riches back,(i.e. michael jackson, sammy davis junior, james brown…etc and a host of pro athletes and entertainers) I think ice cube said it best”theyll have a new nigga next year”. And as far as freedom of speech, that is a human right not just a constitutional one,and most of the people that are over there (killing innocents who have done nothing to them) are there because they needed a job not because there patriotic.I would suggest that you pull your head out of his/her crotch long enough to go online and read the patriot act and find out just how free you REALLY are…Silly Beeaaatch!!!!

creamndacoffee,i dont see any “multi” in yo racial make-up ,yo ass is genetic recessive made in racist america -white.Look my only motivation in this is to lend some balance to this issue.Too often “real” black folks are compromised by the weak negras that still have inordinate desire to cosy up to massa and his/her weak diluted bloodline.White folks like u that just want to play house and dabble in da chocolate(or coffee) without any real perspective on what black folk have been through ever since you’all figured out that you are genetically inferior and have been giving us hell at every turn every since.Race is the ELEPHANT in the room in this country and according to some scholars(Dr. francis cress welsing, neely fuller and others) is the #1 problem of the human race.so if u want to just play (black) it’ gonna become more and more uncomfortable. So i suggest u do some reading in between sips of coffee and help your self out the door,we dont need to be diluted anymore than we already are.

The world is never going to change if people cant stop making racial comments. Just because you have issues dont turn a article about two people that are good friends into some bs about how you cant stand another race. Please grow up and get with it this is the 20th century. I want to ask all the people that dont like the other race who do u think is over there fighting a war to give you your freedom? There are several races that are over there helpin each other out so rude people like you can have the freedom to get on here and say some dumb sht. She is right if you are on your dying bed and you need a transplant what are you gonna say O no cant take that heart bc it came from a white person. Um no you are gonna be thankin god!!!! So please keep ur negative crap to yourself and let us people that do love each other get on here and enjoy what we are reading.
