BET’s “Buppies:” The Urban “Sex & The City”?

By Jeanene James November 25, 2009 1:50 pm

Buppies-BETEver since the end of our favorite shows like Girlfriends and Sex and The City, there has been a serious gap in our weekly TV line up. Enter “Buppies,” a new original BET web series about a group of Black Urban Princesses; wealthy successful women navigating their way through the glamorous Hollywood life. The show stars Tatyana Ali, who plays Quinci, an entertainment publicist. According to BET.com:

After losing her father and being dumped by her fiancé, Quinci, the socialite daughter of a Hollywood celebrity, realizes that her friends are her only real family left. This provocative and ironic series chronicles the relationship dramas of Quinci’s dysfunctional but virtually inseparable friends as they navigate the perks and pratfalls faced by LA’s young black power elite.

The webisodes are available every Tuesday at 8, on BET.com.

Check out the gallery below to learn more about the cast of Buppies:

Here is the first webisode:

I guess that’s what we get for being crabs in a barrel and judging so quickly. This show is pure fab. I’ve seen every episode and it keeps getting better. Here’s a critic/s take that sums up exactly how I feel.

Its the best web series out there and the most original black thing outside of Precious I’ve seen in years. I hope they wise up and put it on TV.

@No1PINKPRINCESS my thoughts exactly. BET is destroying our youth and our community. It’s also sad that so many in our community don’t even know that BET isn’t black owned. Viacom owns BET, the same corporation that owns Paramount Pictures, MTV, and VH1.

Well, I hope that the show sticks around for a while. We need to keep our black actors and actresses working. It’s about time. If we don not keep them working, my tv is going off and black DVD’s will be on my player all day. Nothing against the white sitcoms but it is about TIME!
    ( and to be honest, “I DON”T GIVE A DA**ED HOW BAD THE ACTING IS!”)………….. It’s a BLACK NETWORK!

Hm. I wouldn’t call this the urban SATC – why even go there?? – but I have to disagree with most of the posters here. I just watched the clip and think it’s extremely cute. And very well done in fact. The show is obviously satire which many black people might not be used to looking at, especially if all you watch is BET and Tyler Perry all day. I lived in LA for a summer during college (hated it) so I get a lot of the insider comedy in here and think its really well done. Subtle and tongue in cheek. If anything the show seems to be spoofinng the morons in that world which is nice to see. It’s not Sex and the City at all from what I can tell in this episode which I don’t think it has to be and I don’t know why it’d be described like that. It reminds me more of “Always Sunny in Philadelphia” or something like that. And regarding the laywer/rapper bit, I’m in b-school right now with plenty of black men who have this weird ghetto fantasy about being rappers. It’s a sad male compensation thing. That cracked me up the most actually because I know those guys. well educated, intelligent, but insecure wannabes. For those who don’t know, that is unfortunately very real. I think there’s obviously going to be a class divide with a show like this. If you’ve never known a buppy you wouldn’t get it (and it’s Buppies not B.A.P.S – Buppies is a term for black urban professionals). This whole convo actually brings back memories because I remember the same crabs in a barrel were calling Girlfriends (one of my all time faves after Different World) ghetto when it first came out just because they saw a cast of black women on screen and it wasn’t just like Sex and the City. It had a style of its own and thats what made is an authentic show I think. Its sad a show like this has to even cater to the BET audience and maybe thats the real problem. We really need more places for black entertainment. Sometimes its seems like as a people our self esteems is so low that we see other black people on screen and immediately think it’s “less than” just because of that. Same thing is happening with Precious which is so beautiful. It’s truly a work of art. But some black people think its setting us back and are calling it ghetto. It’s funny because those same people will sit up in EVERY Tyler Perry film so it’s clear that they’re not even in on the joke that they’re actually the ghetto ones. Who knows, this show could be a step in the right direction for a network like BET that fails constantly and certainly lost the Buppy demographic long ago. Or maybe it needs to be somewhere else where the viewership is more open minded. Right now it looks like its not on TV (?) so maybe it can be made into a tv show somewhere else. I agree that this episode isn’t earth-shattering and I hate that its so short (who wants to wait a week for 6 minutes) but I giggled a few times and thought it was clever in quite a few places. I definitely wouldn’t call it BAD however. That’s extreme.

UUUUGGGGGHHHH! I hate when black people aren’t original!!!!!!!!!! The BLACK version of this and the URBAN version of that, like you’re adding a special spice to it or something lol. Stop riding the ideas of white people and putting your own so-called “spin” on it. Sex and the City had great writers and an awesome cast which is why it appealed to sooo many different races around the globe. It was a classic but this crap will TANK. Next they’ll have the URBAN versions of True Blood and Desperate Housewives. For shame BET…for shame.

“URBAN” YOUTH BEWARE: BET WILL ROT YOUR BRAIN!

The only reason I wouldn’t watch it is that they based it in LA. I would have preferred it to be done in NY, because only then would it be relatable. I hate black shows based in LA…always phony. This show needs a lot of work with the writing and it needs polishing. The bad acting and direction is making me shake my head. These people wouldnt be friends in real life.

THE MOST PROFICIENT SYSTEM OF RACISM EVER
The present despairing state of Black America is neither a baffling phenomenon, nor the result of some innate racial deficiency among Blacks; but rather instead the result of a more sophisticatedly evolved racist system that is commonly used against Black populations as a means for maintaining white dominance and control. And although this method is less blatant than those earlier racist systems used in the past against Blacks, its affects are detrimentally real. In fact it is by far the most proficient racist system ever deployed against America’s black population-and yet most Black people are totally oblivious it. It is imperative that Black people recognize how racism has sophisticatedly evolved if we are to be apart of the future.
The national media’s distorted portrayal of Black America that amplifies the negative to the point that it distorts reality is more than just biased media reports. They function as media manipulation psychosocial programs. A covert system that maintains white dominance and control by ensuring that Blacks remain the most racially divided, devalued and most economically exploited group in America. It was implemented by America’s true ruling white elites; they that actually run the country from behind the scenes and maintains their positions of power and prestige regardless of who is actually president.
The constant relentless bombardment with deplorably negative images of themselves that of which African Americans are so inundated with, through a white controlled media, is a very carefully and deliberately designed psychological conditioning program. It is designed to adversely manipulate and shape the minds and collective consciousness of its African American population by subjecting them to seeing only the fraudulent worst in themselves while implying that they admire, respect, and trust only whites.
This media psychosocial program conditions Black people to accept white dominance over their lives by convincing them that it is now they that are their own worst enemies. Its unrelenting daily assault on the Black psyche is designed to break down African Americans’ sense of racial unity and allegiance, mold the character of self-hatred, engender self-doubt, self-loathing, and distrust among their group.
When most people hear the term of psychological manipulation they usually think in terms of the classic “conspiracy theory” that refers to overt mind control such as mind altering drugs with carefully hypnotic programming. However, the real and true dangers are the well proven methods of affecting the unconscious mind by using deception, and manipulation. It is neither magical nor mystical, but a process that involves a set of basic social psychological principles.
