What’s The Difference Between Bey, Kim & Trina?

By Hello Beautiful November 18, 2009 9:49 pm

9404976-a29

We love us some Beyonce. We do. But we ran across this article from the blog A Belle in Brooklyn, and the writer has made such a good point, we decided to share it with you. What’s your response?

“So I watched the “Video Phone” video yesterday…

Here’s what I do wonder: what exactly is the difference between Bey, Lil Kim, and say, Trina? Yes, Bey sings, they rap. She can dance too and does her own beats and production whereas it’s still a big question mark if Trina and Kim even write their own lyrics. I fully acknowledge all of Bey’s talents. But content-wise, where’s the difference? Bey’s lyrics are just as materialistic, her video and stage outfits are just as scanty, and she spreads and P-pops it just as good as (if not more and better) than both Kim and Trina in their heyday.

So I’m confused. Is it that Bey cleans up nice for awards shows? That she comes from a two-parent home? That she’s from the ‘burbs? That she manages to be raunchy without cursing? That she’s light-brite and generally assessed as pretty? (just throwing ideas out there.) That she mixes her catalogue of raunch in with empowerment anthems? That she hides her raunchiest side behind an alter-ego, Sasha Fierce so it seems like it’s not really her? (Pause. You have no idea how disturbing I find it that a alleged 28 year old woman feels compelled to express her sexuality solely as a stage persona or an alter ego of said stage persona.) I’m really, really curious where the distinction lies.

CHECK OUR BEYONCE VS. SASHA FIERCE GALLERY!

And so we’re clear, this isn’t me trying to diss Bey. I’m not a hardcore Bey Bey fan, but I’ve got enough on my iPod to do a train ride to work and a three-mile run without doubling up. And though I don’t like all the content she puts out (frankly her film career is mediocre at best), I do respect a woman’s hustle and grind. I am, however, a hardcore Lil Kim fan (no pun) and can recite her debut album line for line. This is not me trying to bring Bey down, more like bringing Kim up, and Trina too, by extension.

VIDEO: Bey Stage Dives In London

How do you get away with lyrics like:

you like it when i shake it / shawty on a mission / wat yo name is? / what you want me naked / if you liking this position / you can tape it / on yo video phone - “Video Phone”

and not be called a bird? Trina and Kim would be torn to bits for rapping about sex on tape, and they were hardly held up as role models. Let’s also keep in mind that 9/10 of Bey songs about men are for “soliders” i.e., dudes with their pants sagging low and in white tees. Picture Wayne (who was in the “Solider” video), or better, Jay… but in his dealing days, ‘cause 9/10 when you see him now, he’s in thong sandals on the beach or grown man sweaters around New York or Londontown. What kind of occupations to dudes you know have if they still wear white tees and sagging pants post-college? Exactly.

IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, HERE IS “VIDEO PHONE”:

And Bey’s just as materialistic as Kim and Trina as we can see from the “Upgrade You” lyrics:

Audemars Piguet watch / Dimples in ya necktie / Hermes briefcase / Cartier top clips / Silk lined blazers / Diamond creamed facials / VVS cuff links / 6 star pent suites

And while she may not curse, she’s just as raunchy. Recite any double entendre on “Ego” and get back to me.

[You got the key to my heart /but you ain't gonna need it / I'd rather you open up my body / and show me secrets / you didn't know what's inside / it's too big, it's too wide / it's too strong, it won't fit / it's too much, it's too tough / he talk like this 'cause he can back it up / he got a big ego / I love his big ego / It's too much]

Beyonce: “Not Time For Kids Yet”

Maybe it’s because she started out pretty wholesome—despite the barely-there bedazzled “costumes.” I mean there was “Independent Women,” “Survivor,” “Me Myself and I” (I’m just gonna overlook “Bills, Bills, Bills,” an entire song about a man picking up the tab, for the sake of my argument.) There was also that song that I can’t remember the title to, but with lyrics, ["Nasty, put some clothes on”]. (Oh, the irony!)

But that’s evolved, into every other single being say… “ Freakum Dress” where women are encouraged to “spin it all around and then take it to the ground.” Or maybe we can refer to, “Ring the Alarm,” where instead of leaving a cheating lover, Bey decides to stay, referencing and recounting all the expensive and name-brand gifts she’ll be missing out on if she bounces. If that doesn’t sound like a bird anthem or the blueprint to a Kim or Trina verse or two, I don’t know what does….

Beyonce & A.Keys Share Duet On “Elements Of Freedom”

I really don’t get it. I mean Kim wore next to nothing on stage, and was damn near stoned. Like Amber Rose, Trina got called all manner of “sluts” and “whores” for her all –Spandex, all the time get ups. But Bey shows up to sing Ava Maria, the “Hail Mary” of Catholic songs, in a leotard and veil and it’s like *crickets” from everyone, including the Catholic church. She shows up at the European Music Awards wearing red lingerie and matching garters on stage and no one bats an eye. A few years back, she gave Terrance Howard a lap dance on the stage for the BET Awards and barely a peep from anyone.

Is Bey benefitting from our relatively high shock-value, a bar raised by the antics of Lil Kim and Trina, so that she can do exactly what they did and not inspire the same level of outrage? Or is there something more to it than that?

I’m honestly confused.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO ONE SIMPLE POINT…..SHE’S A LADY IN THE STREETS…BUT OBVIOUSLY A FREAK IN THE SHEETS…….WOMEN IDENTIFY WITH HER BECAUSE SHE PRESENTS HERSELF AS A LADY IN PUBLIC. MEN IDOLIZE HER BECAUSE HER SONGS AND MAY PERFORMANCE OUTFITS SHOW A FREAKY SIDE. KIM AND TRINA CATCH A RAW DEAL BECAUSE THEY ARE STRAIGHT HOOD AND DONT APOLOGIZE TO ANYONE FOR THAT. I LIKE BEYONCE, KIM, AND TRINA. I AM BY NO MEANS HAD THE UPBRINGING THAT BEYONCE HAD AND WAS FAR FROM THE HOOD LIKE KIM AND TRINA. BUT I IDENTIFY WITH KIM AND TRINA MORE AND RESPECT THEM MORE BECAUSE THEY DONT MAKE APOLOGIES FOR WHO THEY ARE AND THEY DONT SUGAR COAT IT. TO ME SASHA FIERCE IS JUST A FRONT FOR BEY TO SAY, WEAR, AND ACT THE WAY SHE WANT, WITHOUT BEING JUDGED FOR IT…..JUST MY OPINION

As a WOMAN you should know how to turn it off or turn it on when necessary. Every occassion doesn’t call for scantiness. So while performing you give people what they want to see which is the scanty side, that’s what makes the money. While interviewing or just being in the audience turn it off be classy……When you are the club shaking it your turning it on, when you go on a job interview, you turn it off.

Well, i loved the reading and its a great article. The difference between Bey, Lil Kim and trina is that they cuss in their lyrics and some people may feel that its too raunchy while Bey talks about the same sexual topics in a classy manner which may have some men belive that she’s a lady in the streets and a freak in the bed.
At the end of the day, the author of this article is right and it is based on the fact that they’re overly raunchy while bey may cover it up

Nice evaluation! I actually enjoyed reading this article.
usabkny – GREAT POINT!!! What ever happened to real R&B? What ever happened to REAL singers that could sing live w/ out a voice over. What ever happened to the entertainers that were more concerned with singing in tune, rather than lip-singing so that they will not miss a dance step.
lissasc08 – True comment… I guess it does just have a thicker coating on top, but the underlying package is exactly the same.
    Enjoyed reading everyone’s comments!!!

Yeah she is just like Kim and Trina but the fact is that she will sing songs without cussing and str8 nasty talk like they do .. it doesn’t scare white people so they Love her more than the other two dats all .. she is still saying and doing the samethings she just hides before Sasha .. I like Bey’s style and voice but I would follow Kim and Trina cause they say what Bey really wants to say but can’t..

Symbols created for this Religion.. This shame all point to the same spiritual destination. We can list everything we want. But everything from 5%ers to Masons share the same system telling the same stories in different ways trying to convince everybody in each group that they are special when they are not.

    Its all the same.

Demonic. You are right.. there are things the bible are missing because of the roman catholic church. Took out a part called the apocrapha.. Very important and completes the bible and our history. Im glad you know about those things. Not alot of people do.

    @Zeru25

I can agree with you to a certain extent, but they are taking the Ancient African Spiritual system = Kemetic= Egyptian( for those that don’t understand what I am talking about) and twisting it around, they are following Freemasonry, but just as in any religion or spirituality, the people who follow them can use it for positive means or negative means, they just happen to be using it negatively. When you start talking about the Pharaohs (Egypt or Kemet) You are talking about Our ancient ancestors (Africans of course) we need to study that part of our history before we believe what the bible says….

All of these points were very true. However, “Bills, Bills, Bills” was about a man paying the bills that he was running up not him picking up the tab. Food for thought: How do you go from being “Independent Women” to being a “Cater 2 You” servant?

    The difference? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmWX174bsuU

    Respect.

Not that Beyonce deserves more respect she gives the illusion, the ILLUSION, that she deserves more respect.

She has over the years planted seeds that she is of a good upbringing and was raised in the church and thus she’s “morally” sexy and doesn’t go “over the top” with her sex appeal.

It’s the difference between a high class hooker, glamorous and dressed on Dior but still demanding the money on the table before she spreads her legs.

Really, the injustice is on our heads, and our heads alone. Her job is to lure women, mostly the young ones, into believing this is how a “woman” is to behave. He job is to over-sexualized our minds, and in the end cause chaos. How many young girls run around spreading their legs while say “put a ring on it?” Isn’t that every mistresses theme? How many young women run around gyrating and shaking about screaming “I’m booty –lishes look at me,” now is this really all that “classy” is this really the “morals” we want OUR young women to develop? Really?

I c far too much similarities btwn them 3.cant pinpoint the differences though.their styles are all pretty much flamboyant which must be a trend thing.Bey is more level headed and indepedently doing it for herself, which is evident in her success.Dont necessarilly agree with how she’s climbing to the top but it is good to see any young black lady succeed.Lil kim is apparently dealing with some self-hatred issues and currently identity crisis.and Trina who?where has she been?

This is seriously funny, American cannot deal with itself? Lil Kim and Trina always put themselves in a more dominant and aggressive position and Bey (as she is so lovingly called) is submissive she accepts the gender roles assigned to her by society and exploits them. Women are supposed to be sweet and kind, she then uses her “alter ego” as a way to do and say what she wants, society doesnt find this to be bad its like being behind closed doors and a lot is acceptabloe there (a lady in the streets and a freak in the sheets)

i’m a beyonce fan too but i completely agree with this blog.. i guess the only difference between the trina/lil kim lyrics and beyonce’s is that trina and lil kim are straight and keeping it 100 with their fans.. beyonce is just saying the same thing but with a thicker coating on it.. i guess how you say things really does allow people to have a different opinion

That was a hella good blog. She is absolutely right. That video was WOW… I have grown to like beys music… I think she is a wonder perform. But her lyrics is definately written by someone else bc the hood stuff she talks about a person from the burbs would not know… So lets give jay-z some credit here. But I must admit Sasha fierce part of her two album deal was definitely the better cd.

Until people start screaming.. “WTF Bey! chill out”.. then she will continue to push the envelope.

As long as better music comes from it, I aint mad… Cuz music lately has been suffering..

EVERY NOW & THEN THAT CLOSET FREAK PEAKS OUT. IM HOWEVER A FAN OF LIL KIM & I ALWAYS RESPECTED HER OUT SPOKENESS FOR BEING WHO SHE IS & EXPRESSING HER SEXUALITY…MINUS THE PLASTIC SURGERY!

Our people search for a sense of Identity. Our women hold on to these ideas of “Diva” (female version of a devil) and grab so hard and hold on to things they dont agree with but still find themselves connected to this music. How can you say you dont agree with the lyrics/theme/idea of a song and still allow yourself to listen to it and even be seduced to dance to it anyway? Think about that.. You dont like the images and lyrics of the songs but you still rock it in your ipod? Word? Why? Goes straight to your conscious and subconscious. Why do we do that? Because its self hyponistism. Witchcraft.. We want to be Kings and Queens and we feel we have to destroy each other to do so. Why is that? Witchcraft…
Jezabell was a witch and false prophet who LEAD the children of Isreal away from God. Whenever Jay-z or Beyounce are asked about their religious preferences they always come with the same answer. They are “spiritual”. Hell yeah they are spiritual because they are witches man.
Do you really think the lyrics to these songs are frivilous? Think about it. Beyounce’s whole career has been a spiritual war against men. Programming you to hate niggaz. What songs does she sing that uplift the people she sings for? Are you uplifted by hating someone else? Does it make you feel better when she redirects the negative energy Phoarah created at a common enemy. Your black man? Men are trained to treat their black women like w***es(@#$2in idiots) threw these paganous Godless videos. And our women in turn follow the ultimate video w***e and keep the self destruction alive and current breaking you down in stages. If you can control the minds of women of any culture.. particularly ours. You can control that culture. Satan targeted Eve in the garden of Eden and he does so in Modern day Babylon as well. So if we can save our women from the influence of Satan guess what? Satan can kiss our ass. Thats what i’m attempting to do writing this novel on this tread..
You are being set up. Ask yourself. Why doesnt any other culture treat their women like that threw music or any other means. I dont know too many white men who parade their half naked women in music videos. Do you? Most alternative bands are on some other ish. White women dont do an offensive against white men with anthems and hate music EXCEPT IN OUR GENRE. LOL Why is that? You have to start to ask yourself some of these questions..Only time you see a white girl going at men usually is when she is catering to our Genre.. Some female wigger..
Black men usually when hurt or their egos have been damaged recover themselves by dominating women in some sort. And usually when a Black woman gets hurt she does an offensive on her man in some other part of his life he isnt aware of or doesnt pay much attention to.
And none of this s**t was created by you but it ONLY DOMINATES YOUR CULTURE. ONLY YOUR CULTURE! Why is that? Because Phoarahs have programmed our people to be ignorant to themselves and who they are. We are Kings and Queens. Not because of the “things” we obtain and how we manipulate our wills in other people’s lives but because of our virtue. Right? Right.
We gotta let go of these Culture pimps man.. These people that have hold over our trust to lead us in the right direction.
There are N-gger pastors all over the country taking advantage of our poor trodden situation and just going with it. No remorse. Not trying to help anybody. There is a N_gger in Atlanta named Creflo Dollar. This nigga named himself Create-a-flow-of-Dollars. In short.. Creflo Dollar. Think I’m off? What black woman do you know would name her son Creflo. Come on man… We gotta wake up from the sleep. Christ said alot of people would come in my name but dont be decieved. What better example than a so called “Christ”ian. We are Judah. Period. No crosses to worship. No Mary’s to bow down to. We are decendants of Christ so why would we need to be Christ”ains if we just are…
    But anyway.. Back to Jezebell
Her steps have been ordered since childhood. Till what she has become now. If it was about the group they would have named it Destiny’s Children… She has been chosen.. Destiny’s Child indeed…
We all have our own crosses to bear and Christ told us so. We have to earn our spot in God’s presence. Satan offered Christ the world and he said no. We gotta do the same thing. First we gotta indentify the weeds in our gardens. And as men we have to take care of our women. And correct Adam’s mistake in the garden of Eden by watching what fruits you decide to eat…
