The Re-Branding Of Taye Diggs
Taye Diggs was introduced to us in 1998 as the sexy, adorable male lead opposite to Angela Bassett’s Stella in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” Before that he had a successful run on Broadway as Benjamin Coffin III, in “Rent.” Although he has been in many films including the Oscar winning, “Chicago” as Bandleader, when he tried to embark on being the lead in 2004 on the UPN show, “Kevin Hill,” the show was cancelled after only a few episodes. On “Kevin Hill” Diggs was an equal opportunity, exotic model chasing, playboy that unexpectedly found himself strapped with a baby to raise. Then there was the ABC drama “Day Break,” in 2006 where his love interest was Moon Bloodgood, a mixed race actress, this show was also cancelled after the first season. Many industry insiders have said that it is because Diggs left his base audience, Black women, and we did not want to see him on television week end and week out kissing a whole bunch of non-black girls.

Present day, he plays the role of divorced Dr. Sam Bennett on ABC’s “Private Practice,” and all of his love interest including his ex-wife, Dr. Naomi Bennett played by Audra McDonald, have been black women. On last night’s episode of “Private Practice” Diggs’ character almost kissed Chandra Wilson’s, Dr. Miranda Bailey, who is the matriarch of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Dr. Bailey is not just the matriarch of “Grey’s” but she is the strong black, average looking, women that we all know and love.
We here at Hello Beautiful, have noticed the Re-branded of Taye Diggs. Those two characters even attepting to kiss sends the message that Diggs’ is not afraid of the quintessential ‘strong black women.’ Now, our theory will be confirmed if he shows up as a guest on “The Wendy Williams Show”, “The Monique Show” or “The Tyra Banks Show.”

I love taye diggs but he was with his wife when he was broke so she gets a pass. It’s these other negros (LAMAR ODOM,KOBE BRYANT)I could go on and on these white women would not give them the time of day if they were broke. Being good-looking is not enough to make me ooh and ahh, he’s got a nasty attitude and he’s done interviews where he talked niggatively about black women, so my cooch don’t even get wet for niglets that think like that. Nice body does not automatically mean that I’m a go crazy for somebody, they got to have the whole package, love for the black woman included.

Taye was JUST all body…looks etc…He can NOT act very well, and yes, I think black women do get tired of seeing him lip locked, sheet fighting, blanket mashing with some white/asian/hispanic/other race besides black…Hes truly NOT good looking enough, not a good enough actor to STILL pull US in even though he has admittedly pushed US out….

This is really for the birds. Does everyone want him to fit the Morris Chestnut mold, and play the same character in every movie? Does he have to be with Sanaa Lathan in every film to prove his Blackness? Taye is making his money, and I won’t knock that. Ask Megan Good how tough it is to get “real” roles after you play the sex symbol your entire career.

First of all, Taye Diggs is just his LOOKS. He is a mediocre actor. He made his rise by showing Black women his pecs/abs when being a “chocolate ethnic looking” Black actor was still the rage. Black women went nuts. Then they found out that after he was done kissing Angela bassett “on camera”, he actually preferred White women “off camera”. As far as acting talent and “character” , he does not begin to compare to Denzel Washington. Denzel “refused” to kiss a White woman onscreen. He knew his place in the minds of Black people and did not want to send the wrong message. He risked pissing off the hand that fed him for “principle”.
By comparison, Taye Diggs didn’t give sh*t.
Taye Diggs permantly lost his base. He will not get it back. But liberal thinking Whites in Hollywood/TV industry will continue to push him onscreen becuase they like him. He is the new O.J. — So realize that you will see him popping up here and there.
Think about it. He went from big screen to TV. Then his TV shows have been on rinky dink networks. Then THOSE shows bombed. I’ve asked every Black woman I know “What do you think of Taye Diggs?”. Well, I cannot print their reply because I”m sure this site has a profanity filter.
