NAACP On Lohan: “No Big Deal”

By Hello Beautiful November 14, 2008 10:28 am

Everyone seems to be freaking about the Lindsay Lohan “colored president” comment, but the NAACP isn’t about to start any rallies any time soon.

In response to Lindsay’s comments, Washington, DC NAACP communications director Carla Sims says,

“Sometimes you have to look at the intent… but the word ‘colored’ isn’t derogatory… Clearly she’s an Obama supporter.”

In fact, Sims doesn’t really know what the big deal is. She also stated,

“There’s really no problem with what she said… In her excitement, she was acknowledging that color was not a barrier in the populace choosing Obama. The term ‘colored’ is not derogatory. They chose the word ‘colored’ because it was the most positive description commonly used at that time. It’s outdated and antiquated, but not offensive.”

Does Sims’ brush-off of Lindsay’s comment make you feel any differently about her remark? Let us know!

“It’s outdated and antiquated, but not offensive.” I wonder why people didn’t make as big a deal at Jesse Jackson saying “we gotta keep that NIGGA out the white house.” I mean, how come we are cool with other black folk calling each other racist and derogatory terms, but when a person slips up and doesn’t use the best choice of words, we want to twist it up ancd go overboard screaming and pointing RACISM!

So I think the media just uses dumb little mishaps like this to stir up controversy and get attention. That’s what they get paid to do. But things like that are misleading to readers, does way worse than someone like Lohan could ever have mean’t. The media is the one that is angering the readers and upholding racial bitterness. Now you are going to have black folk boycotting Lindsay Lohan calling her a racist right after she just supported Obama. Then after that, I wouldn’t blame her for really conjuring up racist thoughts in retaliation. Think about it…

People need to stop being so sensitive to what people say and move on to what it is we need to do to be better in this country. We have reached a mile stone in American History, let’s help “Our (everyone in America) President” achieve the goals he sets out and make this country strong and better for all of us.

AMERICANS, WE ARE ALL AMERICANS. WHEN AM I GOING TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN AMERICAN INSTEAD OF BLACK, AFRICAN, COLORED, NEGRO, ETC. I AM AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. I PAY TAXES LIKE ALL THE REST OF YOU, SO YES IT IS AN IMPORTANT ISSUE. COLORED, THAT IS SO IGNORANT. AND FOR THOSE WHO THINK THAT ITS NOT IMPORTANT, ARE IGNORANT TOO!

I completely and totally agree with “Perionne27″ — with everything you said. Yes, “Ms_yella68″ ‘…whether she’s gay or not is no ones business so your opinion is pretty ignorant and homophobic. Maybe you need to get your life together.’

I’m sorry…call me sensitive, but I do not want to be called “colored”. I believe it is derogatory term and it has a negative connotation to it. That really shows her VERY LIMITED exposure to black people. Come on people, that word described us during a time where we were looked at as less than a person…next thing you know, we will accept being called “girl” or “boy” as opposed to a man or woman…and then what? Are we supposed to accept that?!!! I don’t care if she was excited or not…THERE WAS NO EXCUSE!!! LET’S GET WITH THE TIMES!!! LET’S GO FORWARD, NOT BACKWARDS!!!

You take “colored” as offensive? Are you kidding me? Some of you people really think backwards. And Ms_yella68…whether she’s gay or not is no ones business so your opinion is pretty ignorant and homophobic. Maybe you need to get your life together. As for this story, Alyson Mance and Blackplanet is not doing any favors to race relations by making a non-story into a story. When she said it, she was saying it in a positive manner, and spoke of her support of Obama. I mean for heavens sake the woman endorsed him and was part of the Get out the vote effort. Obama himself has made careless comments that could have easily been misinterpreted. Leave the girl alone, and stop trying to call this racism. This is not racism, part of the reason we can’t move forward is because sometimes us blacks harp on anything someone of a different race says about us when it may not even be that serious. I’ll never understand the logic some of you share. Obama would not have won if whites like her didn’t support him

this is from a white girl who is gay? what do u expect her to say, she a drug user, in and out of rehab. she barely knows what she is saying half the time. she cant make up her mind whether or not she wants a man or a woman..i dont take stock into anything she says..she needs to focus on getting her life together..

I wouldn’t want someone to call me colored. There are TOO many other words she could have used. Maybe it was taken out of context.. but derogatory or not, “colored” is so outdated some of us take it as offensive.

Now that I thought about it, she’s 22, 23 years old, shouldn’t she know which term to use? It could be taken as a sign of disrespect – if she blatantly ignored the more PC term because she doesn’t feel like we should be called “Blacks” or “African Americans”.

I don’t really take offense to it. Those that grew up during the civil rights period understand the use of the word colored and it wasn’t used in a derogatory way. Sims is right. It’s kind of like us getting upset if she said “black”. She just used an outdated term.

I say “Let it go!” Back in the day, we were observant of everything that Caucasians called us, wanting to make sure nothing was considered derogatory. This is a new and different time altogether. Mind you, we are still mindful of truly derogatory names and should be careful what we call one another too! I just honestly think it was a slip of the tongue.

she has too many issues that she needs to deal with on her own. why did she even bother to make a statement she does not have to worry about gas prices or rent or the economy at that matter. she has tons of money and the little s**t such as not being able to pay the water bill this month is not top of her issues. geez i wish my biggest problem was shewing away crazy fans and fighting a coke addiction. i dunno i jus think she should keep her mouth shut before she makes herself look like a total spoiled ass!
