Mo’Nique Recalled Sexual Abuse For “Monster” Role

By Hello Beautiful November 9, 2009 5:49 pm

When Mo’Nique, the funny woman with the larger-than-life sense of humor, took on the role of an abusive mother in the film “Precious: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire,” the actress set her current contentment aside and recalled a much harder time in her life. In this week’s issue of PEOPLE, Mo’Nique opens up about the sexual abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of her eldest brother – and how she channeled that experience onscreen.

“Coming from being molested as a child, when [director Lee Daniels] said, ‘I need you to be this monster,’ well [I] knew who that monster was,” she says.

In the October 2008 issue of Essence, Mo’Nique revealed:

“I was molested by my older brother. And even when I confronted him and told my parents, he said I was lying, and nothing was really done.”

He often used candy to lure her into the bathroom, where much of the abuse took place, beginning when Mo’Nique was just seven. Her parents never believed her.

“…Because me and my brother were both their children, and I just don’t know the kind of position they felt they were in. My father was very upset, but it never got mentioned again. I’ll never forget my mother saying, ‘If it’s true, it will surface again,’ and I remember thinking, ‘Why would I lie? Why is there even an ‘if’ in this?’ I was angry with them for so long, because I felt as if they should have seen what was happening.”“My brother was a monster to me.”

Her brother went on to serve 15 years in prison for sexually abusing another girl and has never apologized for Mo’Nique’s sexual abuse.

“He still acts like he doesn’t know what I’m talking about. So screw hurting your feelings. You need to get your feelings hurt, and you need to get some help.”

I STILL FEEL THE SAME ON THIS SUBJECT AS WELL….THAT Rhemawrd MADE ON Halle…..story

Why don’t I believe Halle’s story? Because this is what’s known in Hollywood circles as “riding the publicity train”.
Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that the moment domestic abuse of any kind becomes the hot topic in the media, every celebrity suddenly comes out of the closet with their own story of abuse? First, one celebrity is in the news for an abuse issue, and then every other celebrity has their own story of having been abused some 20+ years ago that they never felt comfortable tallking about until just NOW.
This time, is the movie Precious that has been nominated for an Academy Award. And the movie is about what? Abuse. And once again, every celebrity is coming out like c**kroaches when the lights go off, with their own personal abuse stories. But they do it why? Because we seem to fall for it and eat it up every time.

    I DO AGREE WITH U…buickjazz…

Why is it so chic for celebrity women to tell the world about their sexual abuses, especially black celebs ? Rosanne Barr did it and then everybody came out of the woodwork and wanted to tell everybody about their abuses. Fran Drescher, even Oprah. So many have told, that now it just seems like some of them use it to get noticed. Not trying to sound insensitive but you would think they would want to hide that part of their history so they don’t look like damaged goods.

THEY SHOULD BE THANKFUL THEY ARE ACTORS/SINGER/WHATEVER THATS HAVE THEM WERE THEY ARE TODAY AND GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON…BUT THEY LUV THIS SPOTLIGHT….LOL…

It ca be liberating and helpful in the healing process. Sexual abuse and especially incest is horrible for it’s victims. They struggle to overcome it sometimes for years and in my opinion her brother is the one still carrying the baggage. Molesters never want to admit to their crap but that makes me think why do it if you are ashamed about it then. Hooray for Monique she is no damaged goods in my opinion, she is the Victor. Her brother needs Jesus.
