Have A Recession Date At Home

By Deborah Bennett, Senior Editor April 16, 2009 5:25 pm

Money is getting tight and the boyfriend and yours truly are constantly trying to find ways to curb our spending.  Last night we realized we haven’t gone out for dinner in a couple of weeks and I suggested why not have date night at home.

15 recession friendly wedding tips

Home can be the most romantic setting with a little effort. Set the mood, light some candles and enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner at a much more reasonable price. One of my favorite wines is a Sauvignon Blanc by Kim Crawford which you can get for $14.

Here’s an easy inexpensive recipe for your next date night at home:

Sauteed Chicken in Mustard-Cream Sauce

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (6 ounces each)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 cup dry white wine, or chicken broth
1/2 cup heavy cream (I used half and half with fine results)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon dried tarragon (or 1 tablespoon chopped fresh)

Sprinkle chicken breasts with salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken; saute until cooked through, 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. Transfer to a plate; keep warm.

Pour wine into hot skillet; cook, stirring, until reduced by half, about 1 minute. Whisk in cream, mustard, and tarragon. Cook, whisking, until thickened, about 2 minutes.

Pour any accumulated chicken juices into sauce. Right before serving, drizzle cream sauce over chicken. Serve with steamed asparagus.

This meal will cost you no more than $7, as you already have most of the ingredients in your home. Try getting this meal at a restaurant for such a cheap price.

I prefer a women who’s somewhat a homebody like myself. I’ve seen some couples try to go on a date at a club or bar. To me that’s pretty nonsensical in the first place. There are ways around common types of date internaries like the movies. I don’t think cuddling up with your wifey or significant other to some dvd’s should be considered cutting corners if the first option is the movies. For one it’s more intimate and defintely cheaper. If you are dating someone for the first time and you’re balling on a budget, if that person can’t understand that money is tight then consequently they are with you for the wrong reason. Tell ‘em like Martin use to tell Bruh man and Pam, “get ta steppin!!”

I have a great suggestion too i call it Man and Woman night” what we do is read poetry or have book discussion first off with tea/wine and appetizers then we will do a meditation together and then a warm candlelit bath and massages.

Another way to have an affordable date is to simply go dutch! A lot of women will sit their ass right there and look at YOU when the bill comes instead of even offering. That shows me that she’s selfish as hell and therefore DOES NOT get a second date! These days we both have bills, and need jobs to live so why should one person (usually he female) feel she that it’s all about her when we’re both trying to get to know each other! The whole notion of a man paying and providing came from a time when women didn’t have and couldn’t have anything, therefore the man had to provide everything. These days women have just as much as men and more, so use your “independence” that you scream about all the time and put something on that bill! CHUUCH

The way I see it, times are hard. Even if you have money to spend, why not be a little more careful with it? I have no problem with staying in with someone for a night instead of going out for a night on the town…as far as I’m concerned, it’s not about the money he spends on me, it’s about the time we spend together.

Of course, in a serious dating relationship with marriage potential, I would want someone who is financially stable. But a date night at home never hurt anybody, whether you’re broke or loaded.

My son told me that when a male eagle is hitting on a female eagle, the female will find a piece of wood or something that weighs approximately what she does and take the male to it. The male will then pick up that piece of wood. The female then leads the male flying to higher and higher heights, testing him whether he can carry her weight. Women want to know if a man can carry her financially if need be. There’s nothing wrong with that. What woman wants to have 2 to 3 young kids at home and still have to work 60 hours a week? Black men need to stop worrying about dating and start worrying about preparing to take care of the babies that will eventually come and the woman who will bring them into the world. I know it’s old fashioned, but until men start having babies, their job is to care for the people who do… the ladies. Just my two cents.

Man o’ man some of you women are cut throat. So broke men don’t need chick? So broke chicks deserve to be lonely too? pretty-cp,
Good point. But every woman is not all about the money. Hitwoman has got her head on straight. Men are action oriented. A man should be able to take a lady out and show her how special she is to him. If he can’t afford to then, perhaps dating should not be at the top of his priority list. He should devote that attention to his finances.

It’s unrealistic to not expect money to be an issue in a relationship. However, too many people both men and women have unrealistic expectations of the person(s) they’re dating. I believe you shouldn’t expect anyone to provide or give you anything that you can’t give yourself. But to not date a man because he doesn’t have money, is stupid. Just because some one is down on their luck at the moment doesn’t mean they won’t be on top later on. As long as a person, male or female is truly striving to suceed, has not only goals but a plan on how to execute them and is dedicated. I believe they’re worth a look. But that’s just me.

To expect a male to do something for you just because you are a woman is crazy. The way he can have money so can you. The currency is the same. Yes, it is nice if he does, but to say negative things about a man that is having financial issues at the time shows how shallow a person is. Nothing is wrong with sharing a bill or taking him out. Especially if it was you bring up the idea. Males are money crazy today, because society (especially women) have made them feel less than when they do not have it. A woman should want a man, not a sponsor. To God Be The Glory.

This is great for two people who are already involved with each other, but I still want to be taken out the first four or five times a guy and I go out. I believe that I am worth it and a if a guy says that he doesn’t have the money to take me out, it is usually because (1) he is dating several other women and/or (2) he is looking for a booty call, and not anything serious. Even if he is sincerely having financial difficulties, that is not my problem; if he can’t afford to take a woman out, he should not be dating.

Why do we have to talk about Mrs. Obama every time she wears something twice? I know they not hating in this article, but in plenty of others they are. Just because she is the first lady she can’t wear something twice? How many people do you know that don’t do that? Lol… I wish we could be talking about the politics and not the outfits she wears to political events. SMH.
