Rihanna: “Domestic Violence Is A Secret, I Want To Give Insight”

By Danielle Cheesman November 3, 2009 10:00 am

1026-rihanna_aw

Rihanna, who is currently on a media blitz this week, recently sat down for a candid interview with Glamour Magazine. She is being honored by the magazine next week in NYC and has been given the title of ‘Glamour Woman Of The Year’ alongside Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Serena Williams and others. HERE ARE SOME EXCERPTS!

ON THE LAST YEAR:
Glamour: Let’s talk about this past year—you’ve obviously been through some difficult things. How did the people around you help you cope?

Rihanna: My friends and family have been extremely supportive, and everyone has been there for me. But at some point you are there alone. It’s a lonely place to be—no one can understand. That’s when you get close to God.

Glamour: Are you referring to the [Chris Brown] incident?

Rihanna: I am talking about starting with the night [before] the Grammys and then on. That was not the only thing that occurred this year. The picture leaking…it was one thing after another.

READ MORE BELOW THE GALLERY:

Glamour: You’re talking about the photo [reportedly of Rihanna’s injured face taken by police after Brown assaulted her] that was allegedly leaked by cops. You handled that so well; you kept silent in the press.

Rihanna: It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show to anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet, and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo was [supposedly leaked by] two women.

Glamour: Do you feel that this experience has laid the groundwork for coping with anything so public again?

Rihanna: It has taught me so much. I felt like I went to sleep as Rihanna and woke up as Britney Spears. That was the level of media chaos that happened the next day. It was like, What, there are helicopters circling my house? There are 100 people in my cul-de-sac? What do you mean, I can’t go back home?

ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:
Glamour: If you could offer a message to the millions of young women who look up to you, what would you tell someone who found herself in a similar situation?

Rihanna: Domestic violence is a big secret. No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don’t dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women.

ON THE NEW ALBUM:
Glamour: I think that’s a great message. What about your new album? What’s it like?

Rihanna: I was involved in a lot of the writing. I put everything I’ve wanted to say for the past eight months into my music. The songs are really personal. It’s rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s really hip-hop: If Lil’ Wayne and Kings of Leon like my album, then I’ll feel good. I would not change anything about it. Even if people don’t love it, I made exactly the piece of art that I wanted to make. It’s super fearless—which is exactly how I feel right now. I am in a really good place.

Ok, so I’m not tryin 2 b funny, and I don’t condone violence against women, but really….Rhianna looks like she can gt hell in her and it’s HURRICANE RHIANNA for anyone in her way. I’m just sayin, none of us were there that night, and we don’t know wat really happened, but I 2 am sick of hearing about it. Yes there needs to be some REAL insight into the lives of women (and some men) dealing with domestic violence. It’s obvious that Chris did put his hands on her, but I honestly think she was droppin dukes upside his head also. But wat I really want to know is… Who in the HELL decided that she should be not only nominated, but titled “Glamour Woman of the Year?” What has she done that would deserve a title like this? There are more deserving and accomplished women that should have this recognition! WTH!?!

This girl is only a victim of herself. She suffers from low self-esteem which is why she stayed in a yo-yo relationship. I do not feel sorry for her, nor do I respect her because she was violent herself. Moreoever, she acts as though she couldn’t get out of the relationship, as though she relied upon him for financial security or as though he threatened to kill her. Real victims who go back to their abusers do not have a support system like Rihanna’s…she could have told anyone in her camp about the abuse, and they would have protected her. In fact, I am sure she did, but she was “in love” and decided to go back. Nor was it as though she couldn’t afford to leave him–she has her own money. There are plenty of REAL victims who get out of abusive relationships everyday with nothing but the clothes on their backs, so Rihanna playing the victim card is a crock of bull. She was just stupid.

Now, she is trying to use this situation as an opportunity to speak out against domestic violence as though it has never been before. Please. Rihanna is using this as an opportunity to leverage her cd, which dropped the same time she had this interview with Diane Sawyer. How convenient.

I don’t condone violence in relationships, but one thing my mother always told me is that if you are old enough to hit, you are old enough to get hit back.

It’s amazing how Chris Brown is getting a bad rap but she physically attacked him months earlier, Oprah needs to figure out how to get and keep a man she’s doles out advice. Just because
Gail (LOL) hasn’t slapped here upside her head yet. These 2 people were 19 years of age. I would be under the jail all the crazy things I’ve done at that age.

I am curious to know what she would say to women about domestic violence, cause she hasn’t said anything in this interview except she was humilliated and that the abuse is a secret. Do you forgive him? Will you go back? Should one keep tight lipped for months? These are things we want to know RiRi.

Rihanna is looking good and seems to feel the same :) . I admire her resilience and motivation to move on. Being STRONGER & WISER from any ordeal means it wasn’t all in vain. Rihanna is young, beautiful and successful and I am sure she will continue to get better with age. There are a LOT of young women who are victims to domestic violence and if her speaking out about this has helped just “ONE” person then she has done her job. Blessings to her!

I think its something that needs to be talked about. And I praise Rihanna for being so courageous and speaking up about domestic violence. There are so many women who fall victim to domestic abuse and are shamed into secrecy by family, friends and even our court system, so Rihanna keep speaking up and show that you can be strong and be a voice for other women who have been in a similar situation.

Not really a fan, and no I dont condone domestic violence BUT how long will this story be around? I understand that she went through something that no one should BUT at some point can we learn from it, pray it never happends again and move forward? I feel like we are continuing to spin our wheels on this same story. Again I understand that she hadnt spoke out on it before, so for that I’ll give her 5 more minutes,…..BUT THEN LETS MOVE ON!
