His President’s Black
Last week I shared with you all my challenges in discussing race with my six-year-old, and I just wanted to share what’s happened since.
After the MLK assignment, which required him to color in Dr. King, Justin was given an assignment on Abraham Lincoln. As with the MLK homework, Justin was instructed to color in the president, or he would actually lose points onhis assignment. With no instruction from us we left him to color in the picture of Abraham Lincoln. The image above is what he created.
Yeah So we asked him why he colored in Abraham Lincoln brown. He could have said a number of things, like “he’s on a penny, and a penny is brown,” or he “looked brown in the picture.” And it’s unlikely he’s read Leroy Vaughn¹s book, Black People and Their Place In World History, which asserts that Lincoln indeed had African ancestry. So why did he do it?
“He was a president and the President is brown.”
Wow. Wherever you stand on the debate of Barack¹s race and its relevance to us, the impact has been made and it is undeniable. Of course we corrected him and told him that not every president is brown by default, but dangit if I didn¹t smile on the inside. His mind is open to possibilities that we never imagined at his age, and that is change I can believe in.

Lol yall truly are simple minded it’s not about the subject but about the subject matter kids dont see race but the fact that his son is being raised at a time when he can think that the president is brown must have been a phenomenal thing to experience. Makes me wish i had a son to share this momentous occasion in history with it’s time to look at our accomplishments and enjoy them how ever insignificant they may be. if you were in a room with you being the only 2 other black peopleand they started to hand out money but by the time they got to you and the two other black guys they told you that there’s nothing left you’d but upset and think wow they gave ALL THOSE others money but us black people didnt get any it might not even be racially inclined but that is what black people are facing daily so every thing is seen from a racial aspect by having a black president we have finally risen to level that our kids can truly think about they can actually BE …..president of The UNITED States of America

I’m agreeing with blackdiamond184.. kids don’t see race anyway. I get the point of the article but damn, this was a dumb subject. The headlines for these articles make me think the story will be that good; which isn’t usually the case. Here’s to another drop in the bucket.

As a whole to the dudes that have written stuff on here like it doesnt matter who is president, that he is a mole and other BS like that are happy with making any excuse why they can’t rise and we as a people can not rise. You are never happy with anything. Good part is I know alot of other people that do not feel the same as they do and probably are more goal oriented. The hood is not life, hood rich is fake. I understand that racism is alive and well but but stop standing under that umbrella of excuses and believe that we did accomplish something. You guys are sad.

To my understaning Lincoln was a bi racial president himself. We all know those slave masters had children out of wedlock and chances are Lincoln was a product of his ancestry.

Well to me It’s the same thing, nuthing changes having a White or Black President, it still the same thing. Nuthing in this world is for free. If you don’t work you dont eat, and if you dont eat you don’t live. It dont matter who’s the President. It’s the same thing as if was a White President. Real talk.

It really is a blessing to see so many of our small yet very intelligent kids realise the affect this new change has brought on world..my daughter is only 3yrs old and she is a big Obama fan(maybe because of me) but at least she understand who he is and what he stands for.
LadyInRed96
My President is brown… I heard that baby. My niece, who is only 4, sat in my lap as we watched the inauguration, and after President Obama took the oath of office she looked at me and said with all the confidence in the world. “We did it Bodena (my nickname). We did it!” And i’ll be darned if I didn’t start crying. She’s only four but knows that there was a shift. She is apart of the new world, just like your son. They have been given a higher vision that we may never have, just by experiencing this at such an early age.
iceman30five
Sweet!!! More power to that child man…It’s a new day and age now and Barack bout to make it happen!

If a tear didn’t just come to my eye.. I’d be lying. I am so thankful for the change that is occurring is 2009. I am confident and proud…I am looking forward the the profound affects this has on our children

Beautiful…out of the mouth of a child….
Reminds me of my 5 yr old nephew who called the election weeks before we even voted.
He sat on my knee while I was at the computer and on the page was a side-by-side picture of Barack and McCain. He pointed to McCain and asked who’s he…and I said he’s a Republican and he wants to be President. He looks at me as if I’m insane and says, Barack (he’s a problem pronouncing his name and it’s so cute) Obama is President.
I said, No, sweetie, he’s not President yet, we haven’t voted. He said, (pointing to McCain) well, he’s not going to win. And I asked, why not. He says, because he’s mean and Barack is not. I smiled to myself as he got down and played.
Don’t they say kids can tell your real character???
To follow-up the morning after the election when they were getting ready for school, I, gleefully told them that we now have a Black President and his response was matter-of-fact…”I know.” Like it shouldn’t have been any other way… their possibilities are our ancestors dreams…

that has to be the most uplifting thing i’ve heard all week! thanks for sharing

Smiling on the inside – no you need to smile on the outside too. You are working with your son and helping him be the man he ought to be. Stand Tall Black Father!
poinsett132
My sincereist wish is that the world your son lives in (in his mind and the future Obama reign) proves to be as wonderful as it sounds.
phyllis525
How touching, made me think back 21 years ago when my son was 6-I do remember telling him that he could do anything and acheive any goal he was willing to work hard for- don’t think I mentioned being President! Thanks for sharing.
ladydragonfly9
I agree, Barack has effected us all on a profound level, individually and collectively. Your exchange with your son touched my heart and made me clap with joy. Thanks for sharing your story. Linda
