Author: “Female Empowerment Comes Through Submission”

By Danielle Cheesman October 6, 2009 9:00 am

Shanel Cooper-Sykes

“Get in the kitchen, cook your man a meal, wash your mans clothes…”

says Shanel Cooper-Sykes, a self-proclaimed “certified life coach, professional make-up artist, speaker, and magnificent cook.”

She is also the author of the recently-released book, “Stilettos in the Kitchen.” The idea for the book was born when Cooper-Sykes “realized her gift of domestication, independence and fabulousness.” Below, she discusses why she thinks the key to female empowerment is submission in your relationship.

I completely agree that the man is the head of the household. I grew up in a household, where my father was the head. He made the final decisions on everything. It’s not that my mother wasn’t a strong woman, but she knew how to let a man be a man. It wasn’t about salary, as she made the same salary. It wasn’t about housework, because my father cooked and cleaned. But she always asked his opinion, and let him make the final decisions. In a healthy household, if the man is wise, respectful and devoted to his wife, he won’t abuse his power, and he will not make a decision that will harm his family. He will discuss things with his wife. However, women have it wrong if they think they can be bossy, demanding without contributing financially and emotionally into the relationship. The best thing is to allow him to be a man and let him take care of you.

I think if a woman is seeking a man and a domestic situation ‘acting’ this role will get her what she desires. Yes, it’s a ‘role’.

For women like myself who’s idea of torture is a husband, mortgage, 2.5 kids, a pet and a mini-van this is not pertinent at ALL. Because we are seeking partners who we ebb-and-flow with, who we can be ‘natural’ with, TRULY empowered because we are being authentic. We are allowing ourselves to be REAL, not a role. If the woman has the soundest mind in financial matters, let her lead. If the man has a better, more balanced perspective in parenting, let HIM lead. Gender doesn’t relegate your gifts because gifts are unique.

The healthiest relationships I know of are all about working together as a team. My parents have been together for what, 38 years? My mother has NEVER had to clean up after my father in that time. My father respected my mother enough NOT to be a pig, he took responsibility for himself. My mother cooked (amazingly), washed our clothes, ironed, dropped us off at school. But…so did my Dad. My father is also an amazing cook, does great laundry, can iron and dropped me off at school. They ebbed, they flowed, and they taught me THAT’S the TRUE foundation – a happy UNION.

This woman genderizing roles is pure BS in my opinion.

Oh yes, and for the record I can cook, do laundry, fold like a professional service and do it all wearing couture lingerie and heels with an IMMACULATE pedicure. Those things don’t MAKE me a woman – I just AM a woman. Dergh.

ok, i have no issue with being submissive with some things. but sometimes men take it too far by expecting to be able to abuse my kindness. i love being the female in the relationship. but at the same time, i dont allow myself to be treated like sh*t. so when men learn that there is a difference between a woman being submissive and a woman being a doormat, then he can get submission from me. i dont mind cooking, doing the laundry, cleaning. but that comes with commitment. dont think im going to do all of that just because you are my man…no no no. there are things the man must do in return, and if you start slippin, then you dont get that special treatment. not to mention this: why is it that women are EXPECTED to play the role of wife without the ring? a man is seriously crazy if he thinks he is going to get away with me playin wifey…now i have no problem playing girlfriend, but i wont play wife…cuz why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free…im not dumb…

submission doesnt mean you have to be weak women, we as men understand and notice a strong accomplished black woman when we see one, just be humble about your whole presentation, lets us take the lead some time and you can take the lead as well, there’s no need for someone trying to overpower the other

LOL Well I always knew this. However, some of the men I have met weren’t ready for a submissive woman like me. They were still looking for drama queens, video h*e’s, or mentally just not ready for a nurturing woman like me. Yes, I am submissive, but I do know how to get things done! I will support Shanel by purchasing her book. I am always trying to perfect the woman that I am…
