Do Black Women Really Need Sunscreen?

By Tilane Jones August 14, 2009 4:38 pm

Tilane Jones here, just stopping by from UrbanBeautyCollective.com. We had such a great response to our Iman interview I thought I would bring you more from the infamous international supermogul, Iman.

Our last tip was about great products from the HSN site where Iman has her GLOBAL CHIC accessories line. This time I thought I would hit you with Iman’s best beauty tip, “Good cleansing is the first step to great skin. Don’t use soap!” Wait, don’t use soap? So how should we get our face clean Iman? “A product like my Gentle Foaming Cleanser removes dirt and makeup without stripping your skin.”
imanskin_
Ok we got it. But is that all we need to do? She continues to say, “My most important tip is sun protection! No matter what your complexion is, you need to prevent skin damage. My All Day and Oil Free Moisture Complexes both have an SPF 15.” Now this is advice that we have all heard over and over again. With the environment the way it is, we should all really try to protect our selves from what we can’t see like the suns rays and free radicals. “I always say that the skin you take care of in your teens, and 20’s is the skin you will inherit in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond.” Words of wisdom from this fabulous looking 54 year old.

And we agree! So here are a few more products that we found that will help you baby and protect your skin:
Murad: Vitalic Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer SPF 15. This lightweight moisturizer infuses skin with hydration and energy. It helps to stimulate and shield skin by infusing energy and providing oil-free, essential hydration.

RX for Brown Skin: Protect and Defend Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 15. This non-greasy formula deeply hydrates skin, without leaving any unsightly white residue behind.

Refresh Skincare: Green Tea Oil Free Sunscreen. Broad spectrum sun protection with SPF-30 that contains Parsol 1789 for UVA protection. It contains powerful vitamin and green tea polyphenol antioxidants for anti-aging benefits. Designed for daily use under makeup.

Yes darker pigmented skin needs sunscreen as well. The problem with many products on dark skin is that they leave the skin looking chalky or gray or even purplish. I would like to offer you a sample of our product, KINeSYS Performance Sunscreen. It is the only oil, alcohol, paba, preservative and paraben free spray on the market. It feels like a puff of air going on and when it dries, within minutes, it will leave a silky or smooth moisturized feeling, instead of the usual, greasy, oily, plastic covered feeling.
Please let me know if you are interested in some samples, I would be happy to send them.
    regards,
    Jeff

Hmmm… Interesting topic. I’ve never really thought about it. However, common sense always prevails.

Sunscreens can be used by women with darker skin tones. But ladies, please do so sparingly. This is because sunscreens contain particulate matter (e.g. titanium dioxide) that will clog your skin pores. When the pores are clogged, you’ll get acne, pimples and etc. Some sunscreen applications have aromatic compounds (compounds with benzene rings) that can cause cancer. You may wonder why the scientists use these compounds in the first place. Its simply because they absorb UV radiation and degrade into other forms. Thus, preventing skin damage.

Women with dark skin have abundant melanin content in their skins to handle the UV exposure. Hence, they do not need sunscreen protection if they work in an office and stay indoors most of the time. However, if you are planning to spend the whole day out in the sun, at the beach and etc, then you may consider sunscreen. Please don’t use it on a daily basis.

You can use collagen and vitamin E, masks or applications, daily. This will keep your skin youthful.

ONLY THING BLACK PPL COULD USE ON THEIR SKIN IS A BASIC MOISTURIZER TO KEEP SKIN FRM BEING DRY…MOTHER NATURE BLESSED BLACK PPL WITH ALL THE REST. LEAVE THE SPF, ETC TO THE WHITE PPL. AN SISTA BELOW ME I UNDERSTAND U WORK IN A DERMATOLOGY OFFICE BUT U SHOULD DO SUM INDEPENDENT RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN & NOT BE SO FAST TO LISTEN TO THOSE MOSTLY WHITE PPL’S CONCEPTS & IDEOLOGIES OF WHITE PPL IN REFERENCE TO BLACK PPL AND OUR SKIN. WHITE PPL ALWAYS LOVE TO GROUP US WITH THEM WHEN IT SUITS THEM & THEY WANT US TO ALWAYS FEEL INFERIOR TO THEM ON EVERY ASPECT. AN THEY WANT US TO SEE THE WORLD THROUGH A EUROPEAN CONTEXT INSTEAD OF AN AFRICAN ONE.

PPL OF COLOR WITH AT LEAST THE SHADE OF A BROWN PAPER BAG DON’T NEED SUNSCREEN…SUNSCREEN BLOCKS THE RAYS FRM THE SUN, WE NEED MORE SUN THAN LIGHTER-SKINNED PPL OR WHITE PPL DO. SO WHY WOULD WE USE SUNSCREEN…DUH!! DUE TO THE OZONE LAYER GETTING THINNER & THINNER DUE TO THE ABUSE OF HARMFUL PRODUCTS THAT MAN USES NO ONE WILL BE ABLE TO STAND THE SUN ON THEIR SKIN FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME AFTER AWHILE PERIOD. WHITE PPL DON’T HAVE ANY MELANIN IN THEIR SKIN SO THEY NEED SUNSCREEN OR THE SUN WILL BURN THEM. THAT’S ONE OF THE BENEFITS OF BEING BLACK & LOVING THE SKIN YOUR IN!

Yes woman of color do need sum screen to help us keep our skin lookin young and healthful… I work in Dermatology so I do this on a daily basis… There are SOOOOOO many sun screens out there that you can get over the counter that dont cost you an arm and a leg.. Neutrogena products have a daily defense moist. for your face with an SPF of 45… and wont cost you as much as these other products… Ive been working in Derm for almost two years and just came from a conference 2 weeks ago.. It is important for us woman and men of color to wear sunscreen just because we have melanin in our skin you can still damage it.. If you think your not getting enough Vit D. take supplements you DONT have to get it from the sun. Im a darker brown sista myself I still protect myself on a daily basis… Take care of your skin, its the only one you will ever have… :)

Sunscreen is for the melanin challenged….. Trying to block our skin from receiving the sun is silly. Just another reason to sell you some s**t you don’t need because they know you love to spend money.

This foolish nonsense is just eurocentric bull trying to sell more poison,God made of us perfectly to live and survive of earth.afterall we are dark for a reason, and thats to protect us from the sun and not to judge us for our intelligents or social class.so my brothas and especially sistas don’t believe that bull that black women need sunscreen,we were born with it.just remember:God made us right and the devil made them(white people) wrong.

Yes, we all need sunscreen. I am of dark skin and I remember when I was younger and on vacation, I got sunburn. When it was time to go home, my back and shoulders were so burned, I couldn’t carry anything over my shoulders for over a week. I had to wear tank tops to limit the discomfort of clothes touching the area. My co-workers, mostly white, were sympathetic but also a bit amused that Blacks can burn. People were making trips to my desk just to see my peeling skin and also, to offer solutions and advice for healing and speedy recovery.

I believe that all this clown makeup along with the sunscreen for the most part was not and is not created for black women, all of it is and was created for white women who actually have no color.

Yes Yes Yes AND YES!!! we all need to protect our skin from sun rays..especially because of all of the pollution…its killing our ozone layer…thus making the sun more dangerous for our skin… So yes, I wear it, for those reasons as well as because i dont like being two-toned…dark brown on the top part of the arm…light brown on the bottom part of the arm…face, turned dark brown, and the rest of your body light brown??? no thats not cute..and its nothing worng with wanting to have even toned skin..and definitely nothing worng with protecting your skin from these harmful sun rays…I’ve had two very close people to me to have skin and breast cancer, which was due to the sun and such…which is when and why started using sun screening lotion or what have you….so using these products is definitly a go for me!

well I can “ONLY” speak from experience………….through-out my ENTIRE life, I have NEVER used sunscreen, and as a kid I STAYED in tha sun especially in tha summer and my skin NEVER got burned………so maybe some need it and some don’t but I NEVER did and same as with all my friends and cousins and we are ALL the sades of black “real talk” although now that I’m grown I do use lotion wit SPF-30 in it on my face!!!!!!!!!

Yes we do! No matter how dark the skin, it will burn. We may have lower instances of skin cancer cell growing on us all willy nilly but without the proper sun protection it could happen. Remember during the summer months to properly moisturize, and use sun screen if necessary, the arm that is mostly in the sun while driving. Every summer I see black people with two-toned arms… it’s actually kinda funny to me but you know what I’m saying.

Yes we need sunscreen… because of UV rays which can cause skin damage and cancer…Company’s like Ambi and Aveno both have mosturizers with Sunscreen that are gears towards our skin tones… you don’t think you have sun damage go under a UV light and look at the blotches on your skin… then tell me we don’t need it

Yes, black women do need to wear sunscreen. There is a huge difference between the skin quality of black women in north America and that of Africa. The faces of African women age quicker than black Americans and I believe this has to do with the effects of the sun (and of course the amount of stress and hard living experienced by the majority of African women).
Also Ethiopian women, Somalian women, you can see sun damage in their complexions, it’s very obvious.
But, yes, it’s also true that there are lots of chemicals in sunscreens and moisturizes so choose carefully.

bull crap…don’t believe that white wash…you protect your skin by wearing proper clothing. You don’t protect yourself from the “natural” sun by putting chemicals on your skin…drink water, eat healthy, use “light” lotion/baby oil if necessary..long sleeve shirt and pants in the sun….light clothes…don’t listen to these white washing profit seeking self proclaimed experts on skin…white people still get skin cancer and they cake their skin with sun tan lotion…and all kinds of stupid chemicals…
Pee on me and call it rain…

We are no longer in “mother Africa” we live in the states where pollution is tearing down our ozone protection making it easier for harmful UV rays to penetrate our skin. Yes we need sunscreen and to protect our skin~Iman is right…protect ya skin to keep it tight~

First and foremost black people skin absorb the sun-rays , then it produces “Vitamin D” which why BP the majority of black folks are lactose intolerant, I personally don’t believe we need sun screen since we originate from mother Africa, our people live in temperature exceeding 110fahrenheit, and if you ever notice they are darker yet the have a better skin tone. Me naw believe in no European theories, just like the state that meat is the building blocks (protein) YEA OK!
