Pros And Cons Of Organic Food
Organic food is all the craze these days, but does it REALLY matter what kind of food you buy?
[From BlackDoctor.org]
There was a time when organic foods were limited to trendy health food stores, but today you can find them beautifly displayed in traditional supermakets.
The U.S. organic food industry surpassed $10 billion in consumer sales in 2003, according to the Organic Trade Association, which estimates the market has grown 17 percent to 21 percent each year since 1997.
Exactly what can you be assured of getting if a product is marked organic — and what are the pros and cons?
“Organic means the agricultural product from livestock or crop has met certain standards,” said Joan Shaffer, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which regulates organic standards.
If meat, poultry, eggs or dairy products are labeled organic, they must come from animals given no antibiotics or growth hormones, according to the USDA. Organic produce is made without using “most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation,” the USDA says.
If a label says “certified organic,” it means the agricultural products have been grown and processed according to USDA’s national organic standards and then certified by one of the USDA-accredited certification organizations.
The certifying agent reviews applications from farmers and processors for certification eligibility, explains the USDA. Then, qualified inspectors perform annual onsite inspections to be sure the growers comply with standards. The standards spring from the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990, passed by Congress to establish national standards.
The USDA does not make any claims that organically produced food is safer or more nutritious.
Ryan Zinn, a spokesman for the Minnesota-based Organic Consumers Association, said organic foods are safer and healthier.
“We can’t say organic foods are totally free of pesticides, because there is some pesticide [residue] in the ground water,” he said. “But there’s really a lot of emerging evidence to suggest that organic foods are higher in nutrients.”
A study published in 2004 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry compared organically and conventionally grown yellow plums, finding that ascorbic acid, vitamin E and beta-carotene levels were higher in organic plums. But some other nutrients, including quercetin, a bioflavonoid, were higher in conventional plums, the researchers found.
Some pesticides, Zinn said, have been tied to health problems. For instance, methyl bromide has been linked with cancer, he said. “All these pesticides that have been used aren’t going to kill you outright,” he added, “but the cumulative effect is not good.”
But not everyone is convinced that organic automatically means healthier or pesticide-free foods…

I have always loved buying and eating organic foods and produce. However, one con could be that there are no preservatives so it must be eaten within a reasonable amount of time before spoilage takes place.

Coming from a country where we grew all of our own food without any fancy methods; pretty much like growing tomatoes in your own backyard; i have to say organic is different even in taste. It is much healthier and safer if you ask me. However, in this country i think there are shortcuts for true organic.

heres whats really crackin. you gotta remember that were talking about a food industry that gave us the worst food and drugs ever in the history of man. they never meant you any good then and they never will so they dont mean you any good now. yall gotta stop thinking that the white man is getting better at fairly treating you and willing to give you a fair shake on things. he is never going to do that! fact is, if you want food that is good for you 100% you have to grow it yourself. and to rebut my comment about the white man, dont use obama because you don’t know if he’s black. i have known plenty of people black on the outside and white every where else. the usda is part of the money making machine that we call the united states. they have never given a f**k about your health. they know people are going to just f**k and multiply in population so their unhealthy but tasty i nvestments will thrive. we ate mcdonalds, when we die, our kids will still be eating mcdonalds. they are advertising “organic” because they know people are becoming more conscience in their health and eating habits, but ignorant to the language and scritures of which foods and what they mean or what their body really needs. so they are capitalizing off of your attempt to awaken. your land and your energy and your women is all they want. if you want real good food you have to grow it yourself, if you want a fair shake, you have to get rid of them and thats is final.

I grew up in Arkansas, we farmed and everything was off da hook! when i moved to kali, most of da fruits n vegetables are sent from mexico, dats where da problems lies. I encourage everyone who is a homeowner to grow all their fruits n vegetables, buy organically grown meats, dairy products, even ur sugar should be from sugar cane…make no mistake about it! I really believe there are bad chemicles in da foods, not grown by chemical free.

People like me who grew up in the Caribbean. Living in the Caribbean we took Organic food for granted, because thats what we ate everyday.Didnt know it was such luxury items in the United States.I still do eat Organic food, but expensive. But it is the best way to eat healthy..good eating!!!!

I’m a veggie and I’ve always known organic is better than the regular store bought produce..
I buy most of my veggies and fruits from farmers markets or traders joes.. It’s all about the money.. These farmers and food corporations will put anything in our food that will save them a buck and make them wealthier in the process..
I don’t put that overprocessed junk (meat) in my body.. And we wonder why Americans have soo many health issues, esp obesity…

FOR EXAMPLE COWS ARE GIVEN ALL THESE HORMONES AND ANTIBIOTICS TO MAKE THEM PRODUCE MORE MILK. AS A RESULT THE COWS BLEED INTERNALLY, AND BLOOD AND PUSS GET INTO THE MILK THATS SOLD OVER THE COUNTER. LOOK IT UP!!!!
Dapper82
FOTGET WHAT THEY SAY. IT IS MUCH BETTER FOR YOU. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ALL THOSE CHEMICALS AND HORMONES THAT MAKE YOU SICK. ORGANIC IS DEFINITELY THE WAY TO GO.

it’s better in the sense that it’s natural… just knowing that… even though it might not have any really significant differences why have food that has been altered when you can have the real deal… it’s like sex with a condom and sex with out a condom
