Oprah’s Dr. Oz Gives 5 Tips For “Waist Loss”

Mehmet Oz, MD, frequent guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and regular contributor to her Satellite XM radio show, has five rules to help you fight your body’s cravings and stay slim for life.
The unfortunate truth is that most diets do not succeed, and it’s easy to blame that fact on a lack of willpower. But restricting food intake runs counter to the body’s natural urges. The good news is that you can outwit your biology by implementing these five rules of successful “waist loss”:
Rule #1: Nix Soft Drinks with Meals
Leptin is a hormone that signals the brain that you can stop eating once your body has stored enough energy from food. Yet fructose (a sugar found in soft drinks) interrupts the feedback loop, preventing your brain from getting the message. Quench your thirst with water instead.

Rule #2: Fill Up on Fiber
The ileum is a part of the small bowel that can squeeze, or “brake,” to slow the transit of food through the intestines. When that happens, you get a slow but steady supply of fuel, which keeps you feeling satiated. A high-fiber breakfast triggers this mechanism, because the bowel needs more time to absorb nutrients from fiber. The result: No more 11 a.m. stops at the vending machine.
Rule #3: Build More Muscle
You may have heard that muscle burns more calories than fat, but did you know that it burns a dozen times more? Aim to walk 10,000 steps a day, and begin a muscle-strengthening program, which will help steel your skeleton as well. Trainer Joel Harper has an excellent 20-minute exercise routine. Actually, fast-foods, FRIED foods, starches, sugars, carbs,… our diets are full of them, and as we get older not only does our Metabolism slow down (a lot), we’re a lot less active and I bet most of us continue to “Grease” Down like we’re an 16year Old?
Here’s one though, how come in the Grocery store, the LOW Fat Cold Cuts (Turkey, Ham, Roast Beef) cost a lot more than the very Fatty ones (Bologna, Hog Head, Salami, Hot dogs…) when I’m certain the process to make the fatty ones is more extensive?
For you can’t just cut a Pig’s shoulder or leg and get Bologna:):):):):)
I only drink Light Beer and Diet Drinks and limit greasy foods a lot, it’s kept me from breaking scales but hasn’t kept me from losing my mind on trying to keep my weight down.

I dropped the sugary juices (I dont drink soda), upped the cardio to 3x wk/3o min per session and did 20 mins of weight training and im seeing MAJOR results in as little as two months. Im so excited!

Some people just drink too much damn soda and that alone can put the pounds on you. If you drink 5 Cokes a day(not uncommon for a soda junky), that’s like 800 calories consumed just in soda alone.
Water ain’t that bad.

…I don’t mind Oprah having people on her show to give advice on healthy living. It’s not like she herself is directly dolling out the advice. She’s merely using her show as a forum to bring in experts. I think it’s great.

To PrettyBeautyQueenSB:
Keeping off lost weight is very hard. I should know. I lost 130 lbs five years ago, but regained about 30 of it because of serious life circ**stances about 18 months ago. I got extremely depressed and slipped into my old (bad) eating habits. I’m working on losing the “dirty 30″. Reprogramming oneself to have a healthier lifestyle is possible; however, when stressers come up and critical life events, it is VERY easy to fall back into patterns that we adopted as children. It’s almost like they are engrained in us. I’m not saying this is true of everyone, but it is true of a lot of people–which is why Oprah’s weight fluctuates so much.

I would like to add investing in a colon cleanser product would be a benefit as well. GNC provides a product called Super Colon Cleanse or you can get the regular orange flavored one. Which every one you get will help maintain a clean colon which rids the body of toxins and impurities. And in cleaning your colon it can also aid in weight loss. You can lose up to 20 pounds with just ridding your body of the extra waste that is built up in your colon.

Najaca,
That is very good information…even though I’ve learned this before, it is always good to hear this information again.
There is a locally made olive oil-based condiment that I use that I absolutely love. It has olive oil, herbs, garlic and lots of basil. The guy who makes it named it “Kenzoil”. If you can purchase this oil, I suggest you try it. It can be used on everything–from dipping bread in it to using it to sautee foods. I myself use it to fry my fish instead of regular canola or vegetable oil. A little goes a long way.
I also use cashew cheese, which is made from ground cashews (soaked overnight), Burt’s Liquid Aminos, roasted red pepper (can be store-bought, but make sure it’s in water, not oil), garlic, lemon juice, a little onion and salt. It is a wonderful spread for vegetarian sandwiches (I use collard greens instead of bread) or a dip. Mind you, nuts are high in fat, but even small quantities satisfy your hunger, so all you need is 1.5 teaspoons.
Oh, another thing for people who like the taste of red meat–try ostrich. It’s much leaner–a little gamey, but still a pretty good substitute.

Let me add…add cayenne pepper to your food, and stop adding salt. Instead of using butter, try adding garlic seasoning and drizzle a little bit of olive oil. I think everyone should use more seasoning (like basic, oregano, garlic, chives, cayenne, and cilantro), in lieu of salt. What else? Make salads with lots of raw vegetables, and don’t use iceberg, but romaine lettuce and spinach. If you have the yearning for cheese, use goat or feta or fresh mozzarella in small quantities. If you must include milk, water it down or use skim milk. If you must eat bread, use rye, not whole wheat or white bread. All wheat products (pasta, cereal, bread) should be avoided. Learn to substitute all pork products (bacon, hot dogs, ribs) with lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. I find this all fascinating and my health and energy levels are GREAT!!! Also, take the GNC multivitamin everyday, drink a gallon of water daily, and drink fresh brewed green tea (hot or cold), if you don’t want to drink water. Bromley’s makes the best green tea.

Yes, this is great advice. Black people, stop with the soda and juices. Drink more water, more tea. Substitude sugar with splenda, equal or honey. I also think we eat too much bread and pasta, milk and cheese, and too much fattening meats. We should eat our vegetables raw, skip salad dressing, and focus on eating poultry and fish, as black people need iron and protein more than anyone else. Staying away from smoking and alcohol is good (I do!), exercise and conditioning is key. We just don’t do a good job taking care of our bodies and we feed our children garbage. Stop feeding them candy, fried foods, milk, cheese and bread. They’ll be 1000 times more healthier and sharper. If you can afford fresh produce, buy frozen chicken, fish, vegetables and fruits.

luscioushotcha–You are so right!
I actually started a regimen of eating one raw fruit or vegetable serving every hour from 7: 30/8 am to 4 pm. I also drink water in between and at the end of the day, I have a serving of protein along with a bowl of soup. It’s a great way to cleans oneself. Plus, eating a small piece of fruit helps prevent “crashing” that you face when you eliminate complex carbohydrates.
I lost 7 lbs in just over a week, too. But the cool thing is that I feel better.
luscioushotcha
Walking does wonders for your body and so does natural detoxing by using raw fruits and veggies to flush your system out alongside oodles of water. I already knew diets fail. They fail because it’s unrealistic to eat like that for the rest of your life. I prefer lifestyle changes. NOT DIETS.
SexyT2981
I most definitely agree witcha Raine_86. And @ Jack_Stephen1, walking is not just for great grannies or old women for that matter. I am almost 29 years of age n have been walking the track for about 6 years now. N this is how I lost my weight along with the help of water n slim fast everyday. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. Oh n you have to stay committed to it, n walk @ least 3-4 times a week. However, i’m not knocking the gym, i love going to the gym, and love to break a sweat!!!
Raine_86
