When Should Daughters Use Cosmetics?

By Hello Beautiful May 20, 2009 5:56 pm

How young is too young to wear nail polish and makeup?

Now that the weather is warm, I decided to treat myself to a relaxing manicure and pedicure. The trip to the spa was relaxing and stress free… that is, until I encountered some little toes that threw me for a loop. At the salon I saw a little girl, no older than 2.5 years old, with French-pedicured toenails. Her toes were adorned with red polish and topped with a white line with blue accents. I was a little taken back – in fact, I was a little frustrated with her toes. I mean, here is this little girl not even three years old and barely talking with pedicured toes and wearing lipstick.

I was so tempted to comment or ask her mother why she painted this baby’s toes, but that would have been way out of line, so I decided to ask myself… WWJD – What would Jatae Do? My darling daughter is all of 17 months old, and I think she is just as fabulous and let her play dress-up with boas and sunglasses. She enjoys trying to walk in my slippers and flats, and she is already curious as to why mommy’s toenails are colored and hers are not. However, with all the curiosity in the world, I think it’s inappropriate and unnecessary for her to have her little nails painted. She’s a baby – well, actually, a toddler – but even so, she’s too young to even say “polish”! It must be said that dress-up and imaginative play are part of healthy childhood development, but there is also a time and place for everything. When Madison is done playing with her toys they are put away, and the same thing goes for playing dress-up – all the accessories come off at the end. While she may have an interest in polish, the fumes are too much for me at times, and I don’t want to expose her to that potentially harmful smell.

I am not a parenting expert, but I know that I am in no certain rush to have my daughter grow up sooner than necessary. So my rule is, until she can spell NAIL POLISH, she shouldn’t wear any – and when she is able to spell it, I will be the one to determine the color. If she asks why, the answer is so simple and one I’ve waited my entire life to say:

“Because I am your mother and I SAID SO.”

I love make up-if only just for the artistic side of it. I don’t personally go all out on the everyday look, but when i’m stepping out, i think with me, bigg s**t’s poppin- but then I see some women who for real would call themselves naked with out their “face on”. When you are covering up FOR beauty instead of ENHANCING your own, that’s where the issue lies. I would want my daughter to be proud of what she has naturally and to bring out the best of what she has with less cosmetic use as possible when the time is right for her. And it wouldn’t be at no damn 2-3 yrs old! and and I’ll try to be the one who influence’s her look more so than her friends when she’s of school age- I refuse to let them b***hes have that kinda power ova my child! damn right! *gigglin*

I don’t know I don’t wear make up so of course I don’t care for but my daughter is 10 and she play in the little nail polish or lip gloss thats it. I guess its cute if its not over done or something that they have to do before they step foot out the door.

I AGREE WITH CHRISSYB SHE IS CORRECT! MY CHILD IS 19 AND WE DID EXACTLY WHAT CHRISSY DID AND EVEN NOW SHE DOES NOT WEAR A LOT OF MAKE UP. YOU WILL FIND MOSTLY LIP GLOSS. THIS A PROVEN WAY OF DOING THINGS I HOPE THIS ADVISE IS TAKEN.

I’d let my girls get little manicures and pedicures when they were small…..6, maybe. No acrylic, just a plain manicure, and they could only have clear or light pink polish, something appropriate for a little girl. Not even a french tip. They started wearing lipgloss around 8 or so, clear or a neutral color in the brown family. The summer before they started high school, they get a full lesson on skin care and makeup. At that point, I’ll give them an eye liner, mascara and 2 or 3 lipglosses. At 16, they can start wearing full makeup, I leave it along unless it’s tacky or something. My oldest is 18, and she still doesn’t wear a lot….she does foundation to hide some scars from chicken pox a few years ago, some eyeliner and lipgloss. My 13 year old is excited she get to learn about makeup this summer, before she starts high school.

It just has to be kept age appropriate. Nothing bright or tacky or outrageous.

I started getting my nails done at 13 years old and I also started to try (attempt) and wear makeup. What influenced me were the other girls who were my age and popular back in middle school. Sad thing is that those same girls dropped out before high school, had a ton of babies, and are bi sexual now.

It seems like little girls are growing up fast. I started getting my nails done professionally when I was about…11. And that was just so I would stop biting them. My mom figured that if they looked pretty I’d stop biting them. She was right. I didn’t start wearing make-up until maybe…14.

But my personal view is that a girl should at least TRY to learn how to put on make up around 13 or 14. But that they should also start a good skincare routine so that they won’t have to wear make-up to cover up acne or flaws, but enhance her beauty.
