College student, young entrepreneur and aspiring media mogul, I want to do it all and not letting anything stop me! No One Ever Slows My Agenda...

Do You Have A “Safe” Hairstyle?

By Rhonesha Byng April 28, 2009 6:22 pm

With all the recent hoopla about Cassie’s recent shave, I got to thinking about hair in general and what dramatic effects hair has on how we are perceived by society. I never colored my hair or cut it too much. The most I ever did was cut bangs and get a black rinse. This might be a naive fear of mine, but I have heard too many stories about people doing drastic things to their hair, only to wish later that they had just left it alone.

The other day, I watched an episode of “The Game” that hit close to home. The main character, Melanie, was taking care of a patient who wore lots of wigs to constantly change her look. This patient said to Melanie that she immediately categorized her as soon as she saw her because of her hair. She had the classic side-part under.

Most girls I know sport that typical hair ‘do. But the patient accused Melanie of playing it safe. Her hairstyle screamed “Don’t look at me.” It’s a hairstyle that won’t draw any unnecessary attention to herself.

What do you think? Are you guilty of wearing the side part under because you’re afraid to be noticed?

Check out the breakdown in this clip below. Start it at around 2:10.

I used to play it “safe” terrified that in living in this society where hair hanging down your back is “beautiful” that I wouldnt be any longer, but when I finally cut all my beautiful hair off and got a short, sexy look the guys really started coming around. My ex told me it took a confident woman to wear hair as short as mine. I have to agree with the sister who puts color hair in as opposed to the damaging effects of dying. It’s a good look.

You only live once, be bold, be daring but above all, be classy and sexy.

I think that as a woman of color with long hair who has experimented with color, flat ironing it myself, wearing it just raw in all of it’s kinky glory I think the best thing to do is have healthy hair, period. If you have healthy hair and your scalp is kept clean and moisturized then that’s the utmost important thing.

Another thing is its fine to rock crazy hairstyles when you are younger but who wants to be in their early 30’s and beyond with pink hair or purple high lights for that matter. It’s a fact that people will judge you already on your outside appearance so why add more fuel to the fire plus if you work in corporate america, or any job for that matter you have to be conservative in your hair choices or you will not be receiving a paycheck!

it’s not a matter of playing it safe. It’s a matter of preference. the more you do to your hair the more upkeep it’ll need. Layers might look pretty but when they grow out it awkward. Yah highlights may be nice, but when your hair grows out and you have sudden colorful streaks an inch or so from your scalp it looks weird. If you like to be priss and spend your time looking in a mirror or sitting in a salon, that’s your prerogative. Doesn’t make you more daring though. And it doesn’t make those who chose not to trying to be “safe”.

I’ve always done things that made my hair stand out, color wise that is. I don’t cut my hair or color itself, per’se. I put colorful fake hair in, because I enjoy the contrast, but not enough to harm my hair by continually coloring it. Sometimes, I do things that i’m unsure of, and come out with a good outcome, such as the last time when I got red micros. It was different, and took some getting used to, but I got many compliments. Coloring my hair though, ppl peg me as a ghetto girl who is loud, rude and brash, but thats actually not me. Coloring my hair is the only real non-conformative thing I’ve done.

i had the play it safe hair until about 2 yrs ago when i cut all my beautiful hair off and went for something different, short and sophisticated! I love my hair short and I feel like I cut away a lot of drama and people really seem to love my short look. I dont have to do much to it and I’m always changing the color or adding highlights because I love to be different. The lady that does my hair is wonderful! Thanks Tonya for inventing the new “diva” in me! LOL
