Somewhere Diddy’s baby mama Kim Porter is having a fit!!! Diddy brought his sidepiece to Paris for Fashion Week and apparently Vogue posted a pic of the two attending the Gareth Pugh show, the headline read Diddy and Faith Evans and the caption read the following:

Sean Combs, aka P.Diddy (ex-”Puff-Daddy”) was seated in the front row at Gareth Pugh in Paris. Right next to the Chief Editor of Vogue France, Carine Roitfeld. Accompanying him to the Palais de Tokyo, was his girlfriend: a pretty girl with Latina features, a white dress with a zip down the center and a black fur coat. Big eyes, bow-shaped lips, honey brown hair and golden skin: her resemblance to Jennifer Lopez, the rapper’s ex, was duly noted by all. The two performers have been broken up for about 10 years.

Italian Vogue has just made an unprecedented move in the fashion industry, creating a web page dedicated entirely to the happenings and accomplishments of women of color.

Vogue is arguably the central and single most important editorial force in the fashion industry. The Italian division just re-designed and launched their website, making everything available in English as well as Italian. Part of the redesign included the addition of a few auxiliary pages, two of which are entitled “Vogue Black” and “Vogue Curvy.”

The “Vogue Black” page seems entirely dedicated to the task of reporting on black talent in the fashion industry. While it is a first for any major editorial powerhouse to create a division focusing exclusively on women of color, this page still seems uncomfortably exclusionary. Why must we be relegated to a separate page Vogue? Nonetheless, this is a huge step in the right direction, as black women have very few outlets that honor and recognize their great contributions to the industry.

The lead story on the web page as of today is “Know Your ‘Fro,” a curious choice, though a valiant effort at trying to place an “Italian” finger (who exactly is programming and writing for this website?) on the pulse of “black” women’s beauty trends.

The page also features an interview with Tyra Banks, where she talks about the coming demise of her talk show and her favorite journalistic moments. She states,

“I asked Hillary Clinton how she feels about herself when she looks in the mirror, like, when her clothes are off and when she looks in the mirror. And everyone’s saying, ‘Oh my god I can’t believe you asked her that. oh my God.’ But I felt so comfortable with her, I felt like she was just a girlfriend at home, so I asked her those questions. I didn’t know I was pushing the envelope by asking her things like that.”

It will be interesting to see how things pan out with this new endeavor, though surely we can respect the fact that Italian Vogue has actually taken us into account. It is among the most progressive magazines in the industry, especially considering the hugely successful “Black Issue.” Still, we can’t help by wonder why such a page was spearheaded by Italian Vogue, and not its American counterpart.

Similarly, Vogue Italia has launched a page entitled “Vogue Curvy” which highlights the accomplishments of and news relevant to Curvy women.

Somehow this reminds me of high school lunch rooms where the “nerds” have their own table as do the “popular kids” and the “alternatives.” Only in this case, the black women and the curvy girls have their own web pages.

The photo shoot paints a portrait of Diddy as the throwback debonair beau to supermodel Natalia Vodianova. Vogue’s opulent style of pictorials is very much evident in these gorgeous photos. Diddy’s choice of model, though, is sure to get some flack considering recent allegations that the mogul is prejudiced, and doesn’t like black women at his events and in his campaigns.

Last July, Italian Vogue editor Franca Sozzani put out an issue featuring only black models to make a statement about the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. This year, the July magazine isn’t dedicated entirely to black models, but in commemoration of last year’s groundbreaking issue, a special July supplement is dedicated black Barbie dolls. Barbie first came out with a black doll, called “Francie,” in 1967, and in 1980 the first black Barbie doll launched. The new Italian Vogue supplement sounds like a cleverly orchestrated promotion for Barbie’s next line of black dolls, called the “So In Style” dolls. British Vogue reports:

The So In Style dolls … have been designed with more authentic-looking black features, including a new facial sculpt that has fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinctive cheek bones and curlier hair.

Vogue‘s hotly anticipated May issue featuring the top models of the industry will be out on newsstands soon, and many people are excited to see more black people covering the magazine than in previous history. This year, models Liya Kebede and Jourdan Dunn will share the cover with other notables in their field. Last summer’s Vogue Italia featured a number of successful black models, including Naomi Campbell, Sessilee Lopez, and Liya Kebede on the covers and in feature stories.

Michell Obama Is A Superwoman

America’s Vogue is in its third consecutive month of putting black people on its cover, starting in March with Michelle Obama, followed by Beyonce covering the April issue. This May issue is heavily awaited because it will showcase models, despite magazines having been caught up with putting actors on covers these days. It’s good to see an institution, such as Vogue, highlight diversity.

New White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers has a feature in Vogue! Check out part of the article below from Style.com.

In Chicago on a Saturday before the Inauguration, Barack Obama taped a Meet the Press interview in which he described his vision for social life in the White House during his presidency, likening the place John Adams built to a “bully pulpit” he will use to inspire Americans, especially young Americans, with a renaissance of culture, poetry readings, concerts, and science lectures. “Our art, our culture, our science,” Obama said, are “the essence of what makes America special, and we want to project that as much as possible in the White House.”

In Washington that same Saturday, Desirée Rogers, the woman who will be responsible for every social event and ceremony-from a tea for two to a peace-treaty signing for thousands-in the Obama White House, was visiting Letitia Baldrige prior to officially stepping into her new job as special assistant to the president and White House social secretary, a position Baldrige held during the Kennedy administration.

Baldrige, now in the midst of writing her memoirs, When the World Loves You Back, kindly offered Rogers some helpful tips, like always having a backup plan if the First Lady is unable to attend a function or, for state dinners, checking whether any of the guests have children and, if they do, arranging for a signed gift from the First Family to mark the occasion-something special, like a book, that they will remember for a lifetime.

“Desirée is so poised and so charming, so substantial and capable, but nonetheless I told her how important it is to always stand up to the West Wing,” Baldrige recounted later. “The West Wing is the men’s side, and they will want to push you to put all those politicians on the dinner lists, and you’ve got to be strong and say no. Always represent what the First Lady and the president want. In the case of the Obamas, it’s an exciting mix of people-not paybacks.”

Rogers’s appointment, in late November, did not come as a surprise to anyone in the Obama inner circle, including Valerie Jarrett, one of her best friends and a senior adviser to the new president. Days before the announcement, Rogers had hosted a small birthday party for Jarrett in Chicago attended by Barack and Michelle Obama, who rejoiced in being able to spend some downtime with a few of their closest pals, including Rogers, after the campaign’s long haul. “My party was perfect,” Jarrett told The Washington Post later, adding that Rogers “has extraordinary flair and exquisite taste.”

Rogers never really had any serious hesitation about accepting the job, but before telling the Obamas yes, she discussed the decision with Washington insiders, including the philanthropist Ann Jordan and Ann Stock, a social secretary in the Clinton White House, to make sure her view of the job was “in sync” with the Obamas’ vision. Knowing for sure that “it is,” she told me when we met on a day she was visiting Manhattan for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s opening night at New York City Center, she hasn’t looked back. How could she? There isn’t time.

Speaking of the new administration, it appears Vogue has finally landed First Lady Michelle Obama for a cover — and it could be out in the next few weeks. Thank Obama’s hairdresser for confirming the news: Frederic Fekkai stylist Johnny Wright this week inked a deal with television production company 44 Blue, which produces reality shows such as Style Network’s “Split Ends.” The news reports on the deal said Wright “has styled the First Lady’s coif for the Democratic National Convention, her upcoming appearance on the cover of Vogue magazine and other occasions.” Really? An e-mail to Wright’s publicist went unreturned. A Vogue spokesman stayed on script about whether Michelle Obama will make a cover appearance, saying simply, “We’re very interested in working with the First Lady.”

This September, in an article entitled “American Dream,” Tyra Banks will pay homage to Michelle Obama in a seven-page editorial spread for Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. It is almost as though Tyra got word of the “Janice Sips the Haterade” post, decided to inject a bit of her own fierceness into Michelle Obama’s legacy, and phoned Harper’s Bazaar with a proposition.

Upon first glance, the editorial spread, which leaked to the public yesterday, made me furrow my brow in perplexity as I couldn’t help but question its ultimate objective. And, while I do not doubt the authenticity of Banks’ admiration for both Senator and Mrs. Obama, I found the overall tone of the Bazaar spread rather satiric in nature.

As a collective, the seven photos attempt to capture the various hats Michelle Obama wears as potential first lady, wife, mother, humanitarian, and history in the making. I say “attempt” because, rather than portraying Obama as the thoughtful, introspective, hard-working woman she is, Bazaar‘s Obama appears over animated and without substance, very detached from the world in which she really lives. The snapshots may as well have been taken from a Miss America pageant – you know, the part immediately after the winner is announced… (insert smile and wave).

In fact, Bazaar’s one-dimensional portrayal of such a prolific woman, evidenced by the same million-dollar smile in each photo, leaves me quite unsure about how to interpret Bazaar‘s depiction of not only Obama’s everyday life, but her complexity as an outstanding individual with thoughts and emotions that are equally complex, if not more so. What was Bazaar’s initial vision for the spread and how did that vision differ from that of Tyra Banks, if at all? I’m just saying; something was lost in translation.

It is no secret that the world of politics is ruthless. Period. So, perhaps the happy-go-lucky persona of Bazaar‘s Obama is an interpretation of Michelle Obama’s spirit personified, the inner warmth that elevates her above the unavoidable stress, scrutiny, and criticism she endures each day under the media’s watchful eye.

If it was Bazaar’s intent to capture such an intangibly abstract side of Michelle Obama through fashion photography, Tyra Banks was the person to realize that vision. Yet, I doubt that every day for Michelle is as fierce, fabulous, and flawless as Tyra portrayed it. Rather, there are days more trying than others. There are days when her children work her nerves, and there are days, though probably few and far between, where she is able to let her hair down, and enjoy a few hours of solitude…

Before viewing the leaked photos, I was certain that Tyra would present to me a side of Michelle that I didn’t know existed. Why else would Bazaar assign Banks, master conveyor of emotion through body language/creator of the open-eyed squint, such an enormous task?

I know now that I asked for too much.
