This truly seems to be the million dollar question as it cuts directly straight to the core of some women of color’s source of self esteem and self confidence, our hair. As mentioned in the article, if were in a relationship whenever the idea of cutting our hair comes up some men will have absolutely no parts of their woman cutting their hair, they won’t even hear of it. So one of the first things a woman does after a break-up is go for the big chop. Is it a symbol of our independence? A staple of our individuality? Or simply the result of being a trendsetter? Who knows, but it does seem as though a lot of black men have a problem with the idea of a woman cutting her hair?

Brandy opened up in her brand new role as guest blogger for VIBE. In her first entry this week she dished on being scared to give her heart away, being cheated on, and her relationship with Flo Rida. Here’s some quotes:

“My daughter hasn’t seen me with anybody in five years….I’m very, very selective when it comes to that because I want to make sure that it’s real. I don’t want her to see me with just anybody because she means everything to me.

“I’ve seen the photos of me and Flo Rida. It doesn’t matter how we met. We met. I don’t want to say that we’re a couple. I can definitely say that he’s somebody in my life and I’m definitely interested but I’m not serious with anybody.”

“You have to be a strong guy to be in a committed relationship. You have to be strong and ready for that. And I just think if you’re not ready for that, then don’t tell me that you are and you’re not. Don’t be ready. Be honest with a girl. Don’t tell somebody that they’re your girlfriend and then you go out and act like you don’t have a girlfriend. That’s not right.

Monica dished to the folks over at VIBE about her breakup with her longtime boyfriend and children’s father Rocko and why she used Twitter as her medium:

“I chose Twitter as a forum to say what I felt at that time because there was no other way for me to say it once,” Monica told VIBE. “Had I been on radio, had I been interviewed, it would’ve been over and over again. That was just a quick way to say, ‘I know what’s taking place on the Web sites. I want you to know that I’m okay.’ But it really is a private matter. You just lose the privacy once you become an artist. So I’m not upset about it in any way.”

It was a situation I didn’t ask to be in, so to speak. Once something is put up on a Web site and things about your personal life are spread all around, it’s unfortunate,” said Monica. “I don’t even know specifically who they spoke to, but I do know that I never felt so… I guess the word would be confused more than anything else. If you go to sleep and you wake up and you see something for the first time, it’s a little scary, you know. I’m too grown now to go investigating leads. The reality is that I have to play my position as their mom and do what it is that’s best for me.”

“When I met him, I was only 19 years old and the good definitely outweighed the bad over the years so we don’t have any hard feelings towards one another,” said Monica. “Anything that involves children is gonna be more emotional. I think that’s the area that makes it more difficult… My priority is to make sure that whatever is done is best for them. I’m secondary in the picture and so is their dad and we have a close bond for over a decade. So regardless of what takes place in the media, there’s still certain things that will happen amongst the four of us for the rest of our lives and that’s just never gonna change.”

Vibe magazine, the urban-music magazine founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, is closing it doors.  The magazine has fallen on hard times lately and in February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money.

Why do you think she stayed with him?

Probably ’cause she loved him. I hated him. That was my demons I was fighting. That’s why in relationships I vow not to be that person because seeing that as a kid, you inherit what you see, so I promised myself, I’m not gonna be that dude. I’m never gonna be that person that takes the argument that far. I wouldn’t wanna put a female or child in that position, being that terrified.

Do people think you’re dating Rihanna?

Yeah, they think we dating. I don’t know why. Rihanna’s real cool; Rihanna’s a good girl, like, friend. Not a girlfriend.

How do you know her?

Both of us came out at the same time. We were on the same radio shows, so I’d see her all the time. I’m cool with her friends, she’s cool with all my dancers. Like, we just hang out. We all chill. She’s a good person, a sweet person, but me and her are just cool.

You don’t think she’s fly?

She’s fine! If I was going to date, I’d date somebody in the industry. They understand the time and effort it takes to focus on oneself, so we could understand each other and where we’re coming from. But where I’m at with my career right now, I’m just trying to be focused on that.

I definitely feel like, in the next however many years, if I work out for two months, that I’ll pose naked. I break every rule and mentality of hip-hop, of black culture, of American culture.”
