In a small luncheon with several bloggers last week at the Essence Magazine offices, the actors couldn’t sing Tyler’s praises enough. They both emphatically agreed that their working relationship with Perry is “extremely collaborative,” and that he “trusts them completely.” White mentioned that of all of the creative battles they’ve fought with director, they’ve only lost one. That happened to be the scene Tasha Smith may be most remembered for–the infamous “dinner” scene in Why Did I Get Married? “I really didn’t want her [Angela] to tell him that she slept with another man at the dinner table,” said Smith.

Smith and White lost that fight with Perry and the rest is now pop-culture history, or the future, since their characters from that film (Marcus & Angela) are the stars of “For Better Of For Worse.”

But Smith & White insist, all Tyler Perry is not created equal.  “Meet The Browns may not have been my cup of tea, but to say there’s no difference, that’s just not true,” says White. “All of his content is not the same.”

Kim and Kanye were spotted hanging out in New York last year and of course the rumors began to swirl. We don’t think they ever dated but how fun it would be to call them “Kimye”? We also think their joint obsessions with fame would cancel out any significant lifestyle differences. They both enjoy spending excessive amounts of money on luxury goods and we all know Kanye has a thing for light-skinned girls with big booties. Definitely some potential here.

4.  Tyler Perry
You know who’s richer than Kim Kardashian? Tyler Perry. This could be an amazing “beard” situation. Tyler Perry would add on to Kim’s lavish lifestyle and Kim could temper the speculation that Perry is gay. They’re both working with minimal talent but together they could help validate each others lackluster abilities by focusing on how rich they are.

Here are 5 business lessons I recently learned from my new mentor . . .in my head, that is.

1. Focus on one thing. We’re all blessed with unique, gifts, talents and abilities. You may be blessed with ten. The thing is you can’t focus on all ten at the same time and 1) Expect success or 2) Expect us to buy it. Perry encouraged one bewildered entrepreneur during the Q & A session to simply narrow her focus and master one thing, allowing that to become her feeder for future opportunities. He shared that television and the big screen were always a goal of his, but he created his niche and built his following around plays first. Let’s be real; No one trusts the woman who’s business card states that she’s a match-making relationship coach who sells real estate and braids hair on the weekends. Even if you can do all of those things, choose what you want to be known for and roll with it. Let all of your other hidden talents come out once a relationship is built – not on your business card. We, the general public, won’t take you or your business sensibilities seriously.

2. Learn the gift of good-bye. Know up front that people will come and go on the journey to success and that is their job. Perry calls them boosters. Some people are only there to help get your rocket off the ground. Once you’ve launched, it may be time for a few folk to fall off. Everyone can’t handle where God is taking you and that’s okay. You just have to be willing to accept that some people come into our lives for a reason and a season. When their time is up, we have to be content with letting them go. If they are leaving to pursue their own thing, let them go and wish them the best of luck. If you have to kick them to the curb for being underhanded, let them go and wish them the best of luck. Either way it goes, understand the gift of good-bye and just let them go. Business will thrive once you do.

Tyler Perry Makes History With “For Colored Girls” Casting

Kimberly Elise who plays Crystal in the film said, “I live a very peaceful, relaxed, joyous life and practice meditation regularly, yoga, hike and eat very healthy. Part of the things I did for this was to let all of that go. I knew it would take me off balance and Crystal had to be off balance. So to deny myself those things was a lot and it left me vulnerable, exposed and in a place that would allow her to inhabit my body and speak in her voice.”

Anika Noni Rose who plays a dance instructor named Yasmine, commented on the written work and how it inspired her: “My inspiration was the words. This woman has gone through something that is unthinkable and I thought that what Ntozake put down on paper, about the way we trust people with ourselves, with our spirits, with our bodies and with our lives was so clear to me. I just tried to allow it to live, as truthfully and as clear as I could.”

Tyler Perry talks about the process of transforming this theatre piece into a feature film and the struggles that he had with himself during the process. “It was intimidating work because it’s so important, it means so much to so many people, especially women, not only women of color but women in general. I think the most important part of the entire work is the final words that are said.”

Phylicia Rashad, who plays Gilda, a nosey but yet insightful next-door neighbor, talks about the bond and discussions the cast shared while filming that lead to an ultimate understanding of Ntozake’s work. “Early on, in our process of filming we would sit in the makeup trailer and we would talk about this piece… It came to us all one day, collectively in an instance that all women in the world are colored girls. The color that Ntozake Shange is referring too has not to do with the color of ones skin, it has to do with mood, heart, spirit, experience, emotion, expression, understanding or lack of it thereof…We understand this piece as an outgrowth of her studies, in literature and women studies.”

Tessa Thompson who plays a young girl named Nyla, has to deal with a pretty popular teen issue. She talks about how she looked to an unfamiliar source to handle a tough scene with Macy Gray. “The scene that Macy and I shot was about a experience that is extremely frightening. So in that particular instance I did for that day watch some porn. Actually, I don’t watch porn and the porn that I watched was frightening. I did it just to understand what it would be like to experience something that has to do with your body and also to understand what it would be like to experience that pain and that has to do with correcting an event that was pleasurable and what that means to a young woman.”

Tyler Perry also describes how he prevented the intense emotions of the characters from having a negative affect on the actresses. “Watching them go so deep, I know how dramatic it can be to go that deep. To go that deep inside of yourself, to get that range of emotion and to give that kind of performance, after its over its come up, it’s you’re ok, come up, come up. As we seen in the past, there are people who have gone to these deep places in film and have not been able to come out; there have been actors who have not been able to come out… It was very important to me that they all knew that they were safe. After it was done, then I would do what I can to pull them back up out of it.

Being that this film is an extension of Ntozake Shange who is female, the cast discusses how it felt to have it interpreted by a male director and how Tyler Perry was a perfect choice for the film because of his approach to the project.

Thandie Newton said, “Very often men and women are spoken about in opposition, as this movie seems to be provoking. I think that the film and the strength of the film is partly a testament too the extraordinary collaboration that is when a man and woman come together and that was Tyler with all of us…Also, a man to be open and desiring of lessons… I always felt that it was never words used but that Tyler wanted us to teach him something about this experience that he wasn’t going to be able to access on his own. I think the movie is a testament to this incredible union between men and women which we mustn’t forget of lose site of.”

“For Colored Girls” will be released on Friday, November 5.

In addition to being beaten by his father (once, so badly that he blacked out for three days), Tyler Perry was also sexually abused by four different adults when he was a child.

Perry details his traumatic childhood, saying, “[It was] a living hell,” adding, “I feel like I died as a child.”

“I could go to this park [in my mind] that my mother and my aunt had taken me to. … I’m there in this park running and playing, and it was such a good day. So, every time somebody was doing something to me that was horrible, that was awful, I could go to this park in my mind until it was over.”

He wept when Oprah asked him what he would say to the little boy left behind? “I would say, ‘It’s going to be all right.”

Perry wasn’t the only who cried today, he brought tears to Oprah’s eyes by thanking her for all she’s done for viewers for 25 years.

You have no idea how hard this is for me to do but I wanted you to hear it from me first. After 125 performances in 126 days last spring, and doing two movies back-to-back this summer, then coming right back on tour and doing another 30 performances in as many days it’s all become too much. I’m truly so exhausted.

So, with that said, unfortunately starting next week, October 19th, I am going to have to cancel some dates of the “encore leg” of the MADEA’s BIG HAPPY FAMILY tour. I know a lot of you worked really hard to buy those tickets and I want to assure you that you will be refunded for the ticket price at your point of purchase.

I feel terrible about this and hope you can understand but right now I’m not capable of giving you the show you want and deserve. I hope one day soon I will be able to make it up to you.

I want to thank the nearly 750,000 fans who bought tickets and have crowded these arenas and theaters across the country this year, and made this one of the most special tours I’ve ever had. With me dealing with so much personal grief after the loss of my mother, it could not have come at a better time. He’s aware that there are non-believers – people that think he shouldn’t have touched the original play – but despite them, he’s got news that’s worth celebrating, news that matters whether the movie turns out good or not. Read his letter below:

“We are only a little more than 3 weeks out from FOR COLORED GIRLS, which opens on November 5th. Wow, time is flying! I wanted to talk to you for just a second about this film. There has been a lot of Internet chatter about me doing this film. I’ve heard everything from, “I’m glad he’s doing it!”, to “How dare he touch this!”. Believe me, I know that this is sensitive material and I handled it that way. If you don’t believe me see for yourself on November 5th….

After reading the play a thousand times and listening to these poems a million times, it hit me. There was only one way to approach it. So what I did was, I put these characters in the situations around the poems, so that they could speak the dialogue of the book without it sounding like a poem. And I have to tell you, I wasn’t sure that it could be done. But, after listening to Phylicia Rashad, Thandie Newton, Kerry Washington, Macy Gray, Kimberly Elise, Tessa Thompson, Whoopi Goldberg, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose and Janet Jackson say these words it was awesomely seemless.

This movie is powerful. It is incredible. The performances in it are astonishing, but most of all this film will leave you lifted.

I don’t know if you know this either, but never in the history of a feature film has there been an ensemble of this many black women. That alone is worth celebrating. I hope you are planning to see it on November 5th.”

The “For Colored Girls” movie posters have just been revealed. Every actress appears alone and in character, including Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, and Whoopi Goldberg. Macy Gray and Tessa Thompson seem to be missing from the bunch.

What do actors like Flip Wilson and Tyler Perry have in common? They both are men who impersonate Black women in comedy. They use their own interpretations of how they see a Black woman and they reenact it. They mimic the way a Black woman’s speaks, laughs, walks, and even her stereotyped sassy personality. We all laugh at these interpretations for a few different reasons. One would be that we feel that their interpretation is an accurate depiction. Another reason would be that we find it funny to see a man dressed as a man and recreating her behavior.  Perhaps we find it funny because we know that it is harmless comedy and think that both these men do not feel any malice towards Black women. Either way, both of these men have garnered much fame and success from their interpretations of the Black woman.

So what about when a White man decides to jump on the band wagon and join them in this comedy routine?  Does the ‘it’s just jokes’ disclaimer get extended to him as well? Comedienne and professional drag queen Chuck Knipp thinks that it should. He has cultivated his own version of Black woman drag queen comedy under the titles ‘Shirley Q. Liquor’ and ‘Betty Butterfield.’ Knipp’s portrayal of a Black woman is causing a stir for some because he is a White man from Canada. People question whether or not these are just jokes or if he is really a racist White man that is using his drag routine to disrespect Black women. This doubt has launched people to launch campaigns against the comedian.

I have seen a few of Knipp’s routines and I was not extremely impressed by him. Not so much because I think he is racist but because I did not think that his portrayal was very funny. Still, the bigger question at hand is whether there should be a double standard? Should Black people be the only ones allowed to poke fun at other Black people? If so, should Black women be off limits? Should there be limitations to the comedy routine? Even I have mixed emotions about this topic at this time and am undecided.  After all, Tyler Perry’s portrayal of a gun totting, sassy mouthed, argumentative, temperamental Black woman is accepted by many. His millions prove that.

One qualm I do have with Knipp is the fact that he chose to name his character ‘Shirley Q Liquor’. Why did the name have to be so… ghetto and trashy. Surely he could have thought of another name that reflected his sassy portrayal of a Black woman.

Lionsgate and Tyler Perry appear to be tossing their hat into this year’s Oscar race.

The studio announced this morning that Perry’s next picture, “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” will premiere on Nov. 5 … and not in 2011 as was expected.

The star-studded film, an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s landmark 1975 stage study of the African-American female experience, packs Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Tessa Thompson and Thandie Newton into its ensemble.

Clearly, the studio feels Perry’s drama can compete in the annual awards race. Perry had success just last year as a producer for Lee Daniels’ “Precious,” which won two Oscars (for screenplay and co-star Mo’Nique).

This is a very good sign for Lionsgate, a vote of confidence for Perry, and a shakeup for the still forming Oscar picture. SOURCE
